Blood Brothers.
“Blood Brothers” was released in 1983. It was written by Willy Russel. The play is about an important message that Willy Russel is trying to convey. The message is about class. It is also about superstition, how it effects the lives of people and how it effects a persons personality. In the play there are two twins separated at birth. There called Mikey and Edward. One of the twins is given away to a higher class family (Edward), a wealthier family, a family giving more opportunity of having a good education. As a result one of the twins grows up being very well educated and the other twin (Mickey) growing up in poor family, with lots of brothers and sisters, and a bad education. The two twins don’t see each other until the reach the ages of early adolescence .After this sighting they both wish they are each other. Edward saying “if I was like him I’d know some real birds apart from those in my dreams and in magazines” this quote shows that Mickey is liked by the girls. Mickey says “If I were him I’d know all the right words” this shows Edward is intelligent using good words and speaking formally. William Russle is conveying the importance of class and differences that class can cause in this play.
Willy Russel based his plays in 1980’s in Liverpool which had lots of problems at the time due to the closing down of mining sites. in 1980’s Northern England had lots of unemployment resulting with a divide in classes. This left people who were unemployed with a stereotype as the working class and the wealthier people who kept there jobs as the middle class. Evidently Russels views of society was that the working class was treated as being ‘daft, stupid, and undeserving’. Willy Russel had experienced the stereotype of working class as his dad worked in the mines and factory in the 1980’s. The family grew up very poorly.     Willy Russell uses the contrast of characters to show the major difference in social class in the play Blood Brothers. Mrs Johnstone was the first character introduced to us in the play. In 'Blood Brothers ' Mrs Johnstone lives in a poor end of Liverpool, struggling to bring up eight children on her own and is forced to give one away to keep the others clothed and fed well enough, whereas Mrs Lyons, whom she works for, lives in a large house, very comfortably in a nice part of Liverpool, she wants children but is unable to have any, even though she is rich, unlike Mrs Johnstone. Mrs Johnstone is portrayed as a stereotypical working class mother. In the introductory song, Russell uses Mrs Johnstone to create this stereotype. "We got married at the Registry an ' then we had a 'do” Mentioning the Registry, Russell is trying to show that working class people are unable to fund a wedding in a church. Also, using the term 'do ' Russell is exemplifying the language that people of a working class background use, unlike somebody of upper class who would probably use the term 'wedding reception. ' However, Mrs Johnstone proves she is aspiring to be Upper Class when Russell uses her opinions of an upper class lifestyle. “We all had curly salmon sandwiches.” Mrs Johnstone, like all stereotypical working class people thinks that salmon sandwiches make them look as if they were upper class. Also, the reference to the “curl” of the sandwiches implies that they have been made and were prepared much earlier, which once again conveys their social class. Also, on the wedding theme, “An’ how the ale did flow”, this shows how poorly these people’s expectations are. At a stereotypical wedding, people drink wine, or Champagne, but because of lack of money, and the rush to get married due to the pregnancy of Mrs Johnstone, the guests drink ale. Also, this suggests that all the friends at the wedding reception, or “do” are working class people.…

    The play “Blood Brothers” was written by a music enthusiast Liverpudlian called Willy Russell. It is set in central Liverpool between the 1950’s and the 1980’s. Around this time is when Margret Thatcher was elected to be the first and only woman Prime Minister of England. Many people did not agree with the way she ran things as she believed that there was no such thing as society and equality therefore everyone was an individual. The play is about a set of twins who were separated at birth as their single mother, Mrs Johnstone, was not able to keep them both due to her lack of income. Throughout the play we see the boys, Mickey and Edward, grow up and experience life in different classes. We see how it affects how they act, the way that they speak and the way that they treat others/others treat them. I'd have like to have you for a sweetheart, or a wife, or my mother or my sister anything that a woman can be to man (Cather 240). In Willa Cather’s My Antonia, Jim Burden spoke those words to his lifelong love, Antonia Shimerda. Jim and Antonia were close friends, but were so far apart in other aspects; therefore, they never got a chance to be husband and wife. One reason Jim and Antonia never married was because they viewed the value of the land differently. Throughout the story, Antonia was a representation of a life very different from Jim’s and her strong bond with the land shows us Jim s fascination with Antonia. She was his counterpart. Antonia represented an alternative to Jim’s life. Unlike Jim, she was able to move away from all the stereotypes and boundaries of her class and gender. Antonia was a lot less inhibited than Jim and she listened to her heart more. In the end, Jim’s decisions were made according to social thumbs up or thumbs down. As much as he loved Nebraska and the farmland, Jim was able to give it up for the city whereas Antonia was the happiest there and was content with her life in Nebraska. Jim had a lot of harmony with the land and loved it very much, but he never had to work it like Antonia did. She had to go through the pains of it more than Jim did. When winter would come, Jim was protected by his grandmother’s house while Antonia had to wait it out in the cold. Jim was the type of person that whenever he saw the land, he thought of what use it could be, as in railroads and buildings. He looked at it as an instrument for progress. Antonia, on the other hand, thought of the land as a divine entity driven by its own force. She was a sister to the land while Jim was a master.     A TALE OF TWO CITIES Through the book A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, the author displays many different themes. I am going to focus on the Changing Views in a A Tale Of Two Cities.. All through the book, Charles Dicken's portrayal of France, England, the revollution and the poele undergo many changes. The reader's view of the characters changes as the plot develops. During the "Book the first", the reader sympathises with the common people of France and despises the aristocrats. Dickens emphasizes the poverty of the common people in France making the reader pity and sympathize with them. He calls them "scarecrows" and "clad in rags". Dickens tells us how the common people were so poor that when a bottle of wine was broken in the street they kneeled down to sip it.. Dickens also makes a metaphor of the common people to "rats who crept out of their holes". This shows us that the common people were undergoing subhuman conditions while the aristocracy was living life in luxury. The reader begins to hate the aristocracy when Dickens shows how the aristocracy exploited the common people. We see this in Dicken's portrayal of Marquis St Evermonde. This aristocrat shows selfishness and dominance over the common people of France. He has no respect for the common people. This is apparent when he cold hartedly runs over an innocent child with his carriage. After he runs the child over, he does not stop his carriage, he throws a coin to the child's parent, thinking that the coin is make up for the child's life. This act portrays the nobility's no respect for life. It also portrays the coldness and unsympathtic atitude of France's nobiliyt. Dickens makes the reader despise the French nobility by showing us these acts. Throught the development of the novel, this feeling changes. In "Book the Third".
