Rick Deckard

Rick Deckard is a “Blade Runner”, a special agent in the Los Angeles police department employed to hunt down and “retire” replicants, played by Harrison ford. He is a hard-boiled sort of character meaning he is dominated by an over riding cynicism and a generally fearless composure combined with great strength and skill. He is the engine behind which the audience can place their faith in for humanity, as they watch how he reacts to the replicants, in particular Roy and Rachael. He is the protagonist of the story. Theories are thrown around about whether Deckard is a replicant or not, considering he can withstand huge amounts of pain, however he is often physically dominated by other replicants too. The main evidence for this theory is that Gaff leaves an origami unicorn outside his apartment, the same unicorn he daydreamed about previously in the film, and Gaff would have no idea he could have dreamed about a unicorn unless he was a replicant and Gaff had seen the thoughts and memories he was injected with. Harrison Ford the actor claims he was human while director Ridley Scot claims he was most likely a replicant, but wanted ambiguity.

Roy Batty

Roy Batty is the leader of the renegade nexus-6 replicants and the main antagonist of the film. He is very intelligent, fast, and skilled at combat and is a character who learns how to develop and experience emotions and humanity towards the latter part of his life. He has an A physical level and an A intelligence level, making him by nature superior to all other existing replicants. He is also very dangerous coming from a murderous and subjugated past, with a strong thirst for more life as he has realized that in the great paradox of his superiority he is only able to live for such a short period and is labeled as a “slave”. Prior to his escape he was used as a military service off-world. He represents the way in which humanity is explored from a robotic side, as despite being

Holden chooses to interact with Stradlater, even if he doesn’t like him, because Holden is lonely. When Stradlater comes back after the football game and is about to shave Holden says, “I didn't have anything special to do, so I went down to the can and chewed the rag with him while he was shaving,”. While someone is shaving, it is usually a personal time and not something to watch somebody do if you are not shaving yourself. Even so, Holden is feeling so lonely that he follows Stradlater to shave, even if it means sitting there awkwardly and “turning the cold water on and off”. Holden is so desperate for company that he will sit there awkwardly with somebody else while they are shaving instead of trying to shave himself or get his homework done.…

From the beginning of the novel, Holden tells his story in a bitterly cynical voice. He refuses to discuss his early life, he says, because he is bored by “all that David Copperfield kind of crap.” He gives us a hint that something catastrophic has happened in his life, acknowledging that he writes from a rest home to tell about “this madman stuff” that happened to him around the previous Christmas, but he doesn’t yet go into specifics. The particularities of his story are in keeping with his cynicism and his boredom. He has failed out of school, and he leaves Spencer’s house abruptly because he does not enjoy being confronted by his actions.…

When people are faced with challenges or decisions, they try to recall similar situations in an attempt to help them decide their course of action. What differentiates humans from replicants is that humans are able to store memories. During the first scene of the movie, a replicant named Leon is being tested to determine whether or not he is a replicant. During the test, Leon panics and makes the rash decision of shooting and killing the man who is proctoring his test. Leon does this because he is a replicant who can’t store memories, and as a result he is not able to tap into prior experiences, which would have provided guidance for this situation. Many other replicants like Rachel or Roy would have handled that situation differently considering they are able to utilize their…

Why did you form a monster so hideous that even you turn from me in disgust?” and “You were my father… to whom could I apply with more fitness then to him who had given me life… unfeeling, heartless creator!” In Bladerunner, Tyrell was naïve in only giving the Nexus 6 replicants a four year life span, which led the rogue replicants, Roy, Leon, Pris and Zhora back to Earth to request modification. Upon meeting with Roy, Tyrell refers to him as “the prodigal son”. Opposed to Frankenstein, Tyrell was proud of his creation, Roy, as he was the supreme model of all…

Question 1: A Prison and a cemetery are the first things needed. It shows how strict the laws there were. Additional was the fact that for a punishment, for whatever sin, you either went to prison or were killed some way and buried in the cemetery. It sets the precedent of strict rules through the church. The Puritans ruled everything in their entirety through the church. They constantly went through the bible picking out different verses “deciphering” their meaning and utilizing these as evidence in the persecution of suspects. These translated laws were sometimes skewed and meant only to fit the purpose of the magistrates, the Salem witch trials being a prominent example of this.…

Artificial Intelligence is becoming to be a rising topic, and fiction movies about it are starting to seem more like an actual possibility in the future. Two movies that I watched about this topic, are the Blade Runner, and Wall-e. They both have many common elements, and of course have their differences. Overall, they both give viewers an idea of what the future could hold and the dangers along with it. The movies shared differences in their artificial intelligence, therefore afforded different rights, but surprisingly came from similar societies.…
