BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY
Definition

• Full variety of life on Earth • The study of the processes that create and maintain variation • Variety of individuals within populations • Diversity of species within communities • Range of ecological roles within ecosystems • Genetic diversity • Species diversity • Diversity of environment & habitat

Three Major Areas

Three Levels

LEVELS OF BIODIVERSITY Genetic diversity
• Variety of genetic information in all individuals ( plants, animals and microorganisms). • Genetic diversity occurs w/n and between populations of species as well as between species. • New genetic variation is produced in populations of organisms that can reproduce sexually by recombination and in individuals by gene and chromosome mutations.

Levels of Biodiversity

• Pool of genetic variation in an inter-breeding population is shaped by selection. o Selection leads to a certain preferred genetic attributes being preferred & results in frequency changes of genes within this pool. • There are about 10B different genes.

Genetic diversity

o Genes which control fundamental biochemical processes are strongly conserved across different species groups & generally show little variation. o Other more specialized genes display a > degree of variation. i.e color, height

    Genetic diversity provides a species with its form and function. A species genotype refers to their genetic code; what their cells are going to be used for – hair cell, eye cell, muscle cell, etc. A species phonotype refers to the way in which that species gene will be expressed – blonde hair, blue eyes, large muscle tone; which significantly impacts the success of that individuals genes. Genetic diversity also affords different organisms to change with the ever-changing environment around them. Environmental variation, over time, is known as natural or historic range variation. This can include: variation in population sizes of species due to natural predators and disease, changes in weather, changes in the availability of resources etc. Since the environment is always changing is allows populations to be genetically diverse. If species X were to live in a ‘perfect’ environment, there would be very little genetic diversity and biotic integrity – everything would remain status quo.     Genetic Variation are the differences within individuals in a population. They are what make us genetically different from one another. Genetic variation occur because of mutations in our DNA and recombination. There are multiple types of mutation such as point mutations or chromosome mutations. Point mutations are the most common where only a single DNA nucleotide is affected. Within point mutations are frameshift and substitution. Frameshift mutations are when a base is either added or deleted. The ribosome that reads the DNA, reads every base 3 bases at a time. If a base is added, there will be a left over base. If a base is deleted, there will be two left over bases that will not be read. There is also substitution which is when one base is switched for another sometimes it has not affect since that same base might also code for the same codon. Other times, the base will have an affect on the amino acids as it is ended earlier that intended. Another reason for mutations is recombination. Recombination is the process of re-combining things. Recombination happens sexual reproduction and during meiosis. Mutations that happen during sexual reproduction is random fertilization. It is when any sperm and egg meet randomly during fertilization. Recombination also happens during sperm and egg production or meiois. Mutations also occur during meiosis.
