INTRODUCTION

1. The Rationale

Literature and literary study is different. Literature is about a creative activity and an art. Literary study is not like a science. It is like a kind of knowledge and we need to learn it. Those are said by Austin Warren in Theory of Literature. The way to do a literary study is how we analyze the literary work. There are so many way to analyze a literary work, it depends on what we want to know about the literary work itself.

There are many part of a literary work that we can choose to analyze it. We can analyze the inner part of a litarary work or want to know deeply a literary work by analyzing the outer side. It just depends on what we really want to know.

A short story is one of literary works. It has the same elements like the others although the form is different. It has a theme that makes the story goes well as the writer wants to tell. A theme makes the story clearly to be read and the readers can get easily what the meaning of the story is. The theme helps us to interpret what the story means easily.

Bidpai’s The Camel and His Friends has a clear theme. The theme is about a betrayal of a friendship. It is another kind of friendship theme in literary works. Friendship is usually told on the positive thing in a literary work but it tells the negative aspect of friendship. There will be a betrayal in a friendship when someone wants to get down his friend to win something and he betrays his friend to get what he wants.

By knowing the theme, the moral of the story will be revealed. In the story, there is a camel that was left by his master in a jungle. Then he met the king of jungle, a lion, with his friends, a leopard, a fox, and a crow. Then they made friends in the jungle. The theme is the moral or life-lesson we learn from a short story. Rudyard Kipling, the author of “Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,” made it obvious that the theme of this story is “greed can lead to negative consequences.” I can support this with loads of evidence. For example, the cobras were greedy, evil, and cruel, and they were punished. On the other hand, Rikki was selfless, content, and courageous, and he was rewarded. Notably, some people think “knowledge can help us prepare for the future” is the theme, but this is not true. I know I have hit the nail on the head with this story’s theme.…

Short stories are a way to escape everyday life without taking all day or week to read the story. They are mainly based on fictional characters and can vary in length. As defined by Dictionary of Literary Terms, a short story is “a relatively short narrative which is designed to produce a single dominant effect and which contains the element of drama. A short story concentrates on a single character in a single situation at a single moment” (343). Like novels, short stories are made up of different plot points such as an exposition, raising action, climax, denouement, and resolution; although, not all short stories accommodate all of these plot points. When a plot point is left out of the story, it tends to leave the…

The theme of a short story is the idea behind the plot of the story. In other words, it is not the actual events that happened throughout the story, but what the story is telling you. There are certain aspects that enhance the theme such as the elements of the story. These elements include but are not limited to the setting, the point of view, and symbolism. “The Welcome Table” by Alice Walker (1970) communicates to her readers how religious faith prevailed against the racists views of others while using certain elements to contribute to her theme.…

The theme of It's Kind of a Funny Story by Ned Vizzini is life is filled with problems, but you need to work through them, and learn about yourself. An example of this being the theme is while Craig is in the hospital he discovers his love for art after realizing how much he enjoys art Craig decides to go to art school instead of his original high school. By adding this the author wanted the reader to recognize Craig making concrete plans for his future. This showed that Craig learned about himself and what he enjoys doing giving him a reason to live. This reminds me of when I was younger and played club soccer. Another example of this being the theme is the end of the book when Craig continuously tells himself to live. This is significant…

The meaning of the story is to never talk to strangers. It is evident that the theme of "Zlateh the Goat" is trust and loyalty. As right-thought and self-sacrifice go for "the King of Mazy May".
