The autism/autistic spectrum describes a range of conditions classified as neurodevelopmental disorders. These disorders are characterised by social deficits and communication difficulties, stereotyped or repetitive behaviours and interests, and in some cases, cognitive delays. These disorders include Autism, Asperger’s syndrome and Rett Syndrome.…
Autistic Spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that is characterised by lack of social skills, aggressive behaviour, lack of imagination, difficulties communicating and repetitive behaviour. (Anderson et al, 2008)…
Of interest is the fact that more people than ever are being diagnosed with autism or another ASD. Government statistics indicate that the rate of autism is rising between 10 and 17 percent each year. According to the CDC, of the approximately four million infants born every year, 24,000 of them will ultimately be diagnosed as autistic. What accounts for this startling rise? It could be that much of this increase stems from newer (and broader) definitions of ASDs, as well as more targeted efforts at diagnosis. For example, a child who is diagnosed with autism today may have been considered merely “odd” 20 or 30 years ago. But it could also be that there has been an actual increase in the number of people with an ASD. Many experts believe that the explanation is likely to be found in a combination of these…
In the article, "Three Reasons Not to Believe in an Autism Epidemic," the authors developed three arguments against the belief of autism as an epidemic. Furthermore, the authors assert that the causes of the increase of autism is affected by raised public awareness of the condition of autism, broadened diagnostic criteria, and improved case finding of individuals with autism. Beginning in 1940, there were only three known symptoms for autism. In 1980, there were six mandatory standards an individual had to meet in order to be diagnosed with autism. Then, in 1994, the provisions were broadened to sixteen optional criteria, eight of which had to be met for an individual to be diagnosed, but what was not mentioned was that before 1940, there was no record of diagnoses of autism.…
Autism also known as Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a group of disorders of brain development. These disorders are described such as difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. People with Autism can have problems with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances.…
Autism spectrum disorder is a general term for the complex neurological diseases that affect brain development. The common characteristics of the disease are difficulties in social interactions, speech communication and repetitive sounds and movements. In May of 2013, the DSM-5 diagnostic manual placed all autism disorders under one umbrella known as ASD or autism spectrum disorders. This merged all of the sub-types like Asperger syndrome, autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (autism speaks, 2014). Common characteristics of autism are intellectual disability, challenges in motor coordination, attention span issues, physical issues like sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. Some children with autism spectrum disorders have excellent visual skills, music, math and art abilities. Autism is born in early brain development. Evident signs of autism emerge between the age of two and three years of age. If a child is diagnosed at an early age behavioral therapies can be used to improve the development of the child. In our society the number of autism disorder is increasing in number of cases reported. However, it is not clear whether this is due to better detection and reporting or is it a real increase in the number of cases of children with autism spectrum disorder. Autism spectrum disorder is a heterogeneous condition which means no two children or adults with autism have exactly the same symptoms, but challenges fall into core domains that are reliably measured and normally consistent across time, even though specific behaviors may change with development (Lord, 2000).…
Autism, what does this mean? What kind of impact can it have on a family, on a child? The definition of Autism is a variable developmental disorder that appears by age three and is characterized by impairment of the ability to form normal social relationships, by impairment of the ability to communicate with others, and by stereotyped behavior patterns. (1) There are many impacts of Autism, particularly with the family because having a child born with Autism means a lot more extra care to this child and all of the things that he or she needs to overcome. For my service project my Mother and I taught Sunday school. In our class fifty…
Autism is one of the most common developmental disabilities. People with autism, also called autism spectrum disorder (ASD), have differences in the way their brains develop and process information. As a result, they face significant communication, social, and behavior challenges. Autism affects about 1 in 88 children.…
Gnaulati’s present day reasoning makes no mention of the changes that have underwent for the diagnosis of ASD, and his explanation actually refutes Buron & Wolfberg’s claim that professionals have become better at diagnosing. Moreover, Buron & Wolfberg claim that overdiagnosing has been occurring because it is better to be safe than sorry. Gnaulati does not believe in the sake of diagnosing for the fact that the therapeutic procedures that must be undertook are expensive and time consuming. Yet, it would only seem logical to help your child, especially if treatment is only beneficial and not…
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism is as follows: an average of 1 in 50 children in the United States have an ASD. On average, ASDs are 4 to 5 times more likely to occur in boys than in girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. ASD affects over 2 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide. From 2007 to 2013,…
Autism spectrum disorders are life long and have been found to be prevalent in up to 1% of the adolescent population (Simonoff et al., 2008). Many studies have shown that the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders have increased radically (Vismara & Rogers, 2008). However, there may be many cases not yet reported or diagnosed correctly. The disorder covers a range of individuals with impairments that change from one person to the next. One individual may have difficulty with language communication and another might have more difficulty with repetition. Since ASDs have an early onset, it is important to identify the disorder early so that interventions can be initiated (Simonoff et al., 2008). The disability is life long and treatment is needed…
Autism or autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), are a family of increasingly prevalent disabilities that qualify a child for special education services in the school under PL94-142, now called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in 88 American children have been identified as being on the autism spectrum- a ten-fold increase over the last 40 years (Autism Speaks Inc., 2012). With this type of growth, school counselors are sure to support these types of students often in their careers.…
According to Mayo Clinic, Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorders. Its symptoms include lack of communication, the inability to use language to interact, and certain repetitive behaviors. Jeffrey S. Gerber and Paul A. Offit in their work “Vaccines and Autism” studied whether autism can be caused by MMR vaccines, thimerosal preservative, or due to multiple vaccines. The researchers created three different hypothesis and collected its data from different countries worldwide. They concluded in their study that autism disorder is neither caused by MMR vaccine nor Thimerosal containing vaccines nor by the multiple vaccines. Based on my knowledge, and experience, I agree with the findings of Gerber and Offit that childhood vaccines do not cause…

The only information that I had ever known regarding autism came from a nineteen eighties movie called Rain Man. Even then, the thought of it was quickly lost in the archives of my mind. Not until I had a child of my own did I realize the significance of autism and the effects that it has on the children of which it afflicts and their families. A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that almost one out of every one hundred and fifty children was affected by Autism. Even more alarming is the fact that it affects one and every ninety-six boys. Other than its prevalence in boys, Autism has no known boundaries (Autism Society of America, 2008).…
