Atticus Finch Values Essay Example
Atticus Finch is Jem and Scout’s father. He is full of great morals and values. His wife died when he Scout was 2 and he was 15 years older than the wife. Atticus was a lawyer and studied law at Montogomery. Some of Atticus’s values and morals consist of: Respect, racial equality, courage and confidence.
Respect:
“You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view — until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” --Atticus (pg. 30)
Atticus is showing us that one of his values are being respectful as you should not judge someone until you have climbed into their skin and walked around to experience how that person feels. Atticus tells Jem and Scout this so they learn from it and listen to their father. Atticus want’s his children to be respectful like himself.
Racial Equality:
“As you grow older you’ll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, of how finea family he comes from, that white man is trash.” (pg. 200)
Atticus Finch isn’t racist, he wants everyone to be treated the same; he can see through a person’s race and find their good self.
Courage:
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand.its when you know you're licked before but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do. Mrs dubose won, all ninety- eight pounds of her. According to her views, she died beholden to nothing and nobody. She was the bravest person I knew.”
Atticus want’s his children to understand that courage isn’t just a person with a gun in his hand. He wants them to realise that courage can consist of many other things such as: being brave or being unique as going against society (example: supporting racial equality).
