Antony and Cleopatra 5 Essay Example
The representations and interplay of types of power: In Shakespeare's famous play Antony and Cleopatra, the powerful are portrayed including their personalities, their reactions to other powerful figures and the interplay of these powers as the characters interact. Antony's Power: Shakespeare uses Rome and Egypt as binary opposites not just to reflect qualities inherent in the two places, but the changes that come upon Antony depending on which place he is in. The changes in Antony's behaviour and power-usage patterns can be seen through Shakespeare's constant juxtaposition of the Egyptian and Roman worlds. Antony's behaviour tends to change as in the exotic place that is Egypt Antony is allowed to escape from his Roman self : "I will to Egypt…I'th' east my pleasure lies."2.3.38-40. The word "pleasure" indicates that Egypt has a sexual appeal to him in the form of Cleopatra. He adores his role as king in Egypt, being the self-indulgent lover of Cleopatra. However in Rome, Antony must attend to his political ambitions, duty to administration, his citizens and soldiers. These are duties he does not wish to be burdened with: "Let Rome in Tiber melt and the wide arch / Of the ranged empire fall!" Antony describes his feelings while in Egypt as a hyperbole, which reflects how his behaviour becomes irrational. Moving on to Cleopatra's Power, it can be seen that she uses her coercive sexual power to entice and manipulate Antony's behaviour and decisions, inevitably ending in the weakening of their relationship. Cleopatra knows her powers of manipulation: "I drunk him to bed;/ Then put my tires and mantles on him, whilst I wore his sword Philippan."2.5.21-23. She makes a mockery of him as he is the Philippan victor that is metaphorically stripped of his sword and therefore his political and sexual power, by a woman. She is described by him in a metaphor, as an "enchanting queen" which connotes a sense of uncontrolled mesmerisation with a powerful figure. To

    It’s almost immediately clear from this passage that Plutarch believed Antony to be a prisoner in the relationship. He was kept in “constant tutelage” and Cleopatra “released him neither night nor day.” Tutelage meaning “protection of, or authority over, someone or something”  (http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/tutelage?view=uk – Accessed 6th November 2008) - these validations are great but it would be even better if you put them in a bibliography and had a reference here – it would also reduce your word count, makes it clear this is not a relationship of mutual love. Antony is rarely allowed out of Cleopatra’s sight. She did everything with him: “She played at dice…of a serving maiden.” – this quote is unclear, you need more of it in order to make sense She joined in on all activities that he did, despite how debasing they might be to a Queen. But isn’t the emphasis on how much more debasing they were to an ‘Imperator’ ? Although this might have been an act of love, Plutarch portrays it as something that stems from Cleopatra’s obsessive need to be with Antony and watch him constantly. Plutarch re-iterates his view that Antony is a prisoner, not a lover.  Is this linked to the disapproval of romantic love as discussed in Book 1 p 11 ?…

    Brutus: A Tragic Hero By Chad Gingery In the play Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, Brutus is a tragic hero for he was easily manipulated, naive and patriotic. Brutus believed that the Romans wanted him as the leader to assassinate Caesar, because of the forged notes that were sent to him by Cassius. The note explained how to assassinate Caesar by Speaking, Striking and Redressing. This note by Cassius caused Brutus to be manipulated into joining the conspirators, one of many flaws that leads to the downfall of Brutus and the assassination of Caesar. Brutus' trusting attitude toward Antony is an example of one of his flaws. Brutus allowed Antony to give a funeral speech for Julius Caesar and to be sure not to speak negatively about the conspiracy. This resulted in Antony leading a mob against the conspirators, Revenge!, About!, Seek!, Burn!, Fire!, Kill!, Slay!, Let not a traitor live.!(3.2.216). From this powerful speech and Brutus' naïveté, Antony became his nemesis, an event that would ultimately lead to Brutus' downfall. Brutus had an overabundance of love for his country which blinded him to the truth. Brutus had said in one of his soliloquies, If then that a friend demand why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer: Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved Rome more. Brutus had honored Caesar but Brutus felt that Caesar was too ambitious. Brutus also felt that Caesar made the Romans as slaves. Brutus was a patriotic man who did not see past his patriotism, to see the exploitation of his comrades. Brutus was noble in how he was benevolent towards his fellow man, but this nobility was a negative component that led to his inevitable loss of nobility. Brutus had many errors in his plans in Julius Caesar; one of those errors was an exorbitant amount of love for Rome. Tragedy is when a person is deprived of something loved.
