A Fight for Peace through Education What is life? It’s something people take for granted every single day. They go about drinking they’re latte’s and don’t give a damn about anyone but themselves. Well okay not all people are like that. There are some good people left in the world that want to help out those less unfortunate than themselves. Like Greg Mortenson who took the time to help those in need in Pakistan by building schools for uneducated women. In his book “Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time” he selflessly acted and built 55 schools for the uneducated. Greg Mortenson’s original goal was to climb the Karakoram Mountains. After a failed attempt to climb K2 he came to a village in the Karakoram Mountains. The villagers treated him with kindness and welcomed him with open arms. This book gave a different outlook on the way other countries deal with poverty. “Mortenson smelled the village of Korphe a mile before he approached it. The scent of juniper woodsmoke and unwashed humanity was overwhelming after the sterility of altitude” (24).

I found it wonderful that someone like Mortenson went from a mountaineer to a humanitarian. God’s plan for Mortenson wasn’t to be a mountaineer at all; his plan for him was to do great things in impoverished countries. The way that he failed to climb K2 then randomly wandered into Pakistan is miraculous, something even more inspiring then that is that he stayed around long enough to be moved by the people and to see the real problems that were going on in this village. He was moved by the way that the kids were trying to teach themselves using twigs and stones to draw things in the dirt. The children wanted to learn but they didn’t have the resources to do so. When Mortenson saw this he decided to build schools for the uneducated.
