adiabatic proceses
Lab Instructions: EX: 21-22
Adiabatic Processes:
Humidity- the amount of water vapor present in the air.
Absolute Humidity- The amount of water vapor present in a unit volume of air.
Relative Humidity-the ration of the amount of water vapor actually present in the air to the greatest amount possible at the same temperature.
R. H = Actual Water Vapor content/ Water Vapor Capacity (Maximum Capacity that the air can hold)
Saturation Mixing Ratio- The water vapor capacity of air at given temperature.
As temperature increases, water vapor capacity of air also increases.
Dew Point Temperature-
Conceptual Framework:
As temp. of parcel of air decreases R.H. increases
When Parcel of air has cooled to the dew point of temp, it becomes saturated and condensation takes place.
With altitude pressure decreases – as parcel of air rises – it comes under low pressure – and expands.
Adiabatic – a process where the parcel temperature changes due to an expansion or compression, no heat is added or take away from the parcel.
The parcel expands since the lower pressure outside allows the air molecules to push out on the parcel walls.
Since it takes energy for the parcel molecules to push out on the parcel walls, they use up some of their internal energy in the process.
Therefore, the parcel also cools since temperature is proportional to molecular internal energy.

DAR & SAR
If a parcel of rising air is unsaturated (RH is less than 100%) it will cool at Dry Adiabatic Rate. ( 10 degrees Celsius per 1000 metres or 5.5 degrees farenheight).

Let’s first understand what a dew point is. The dew point is basically the temperature at which the if it cool’s to a certain temp you will get hundred percent relative humidity. If the dew point drops low enough the cold air won’t be capable of holding the moisture. If the temperature is dropping and you have a stable dew point I would predict a higher amount of relative humidity. The lower the dew point dropped is when you decrease in relative humidity. If you had a hot summer day and a steady dew point; you would actually had a lower relative humidity.…

Air pressure is the amount of force that is exerted over an area of surface. The weight of the air molecules act as a force on the earth. As you climb in elevation, air pressure will decrease because there are less air molecules above us. The moon does not have an atmosphere so there is no air pressure on the moon.…

Again, in the lab manual is says that “at constant pressure, the volume occupied by a given mass of a gas is directionally proportional to its temperature, measured in degrees Kelvin (˚K= 273+˚C): V=k’T.” The Kinetic Molecular Theory explains Charles’ Law by the average kinetic energy of the particles in a gas is linked to the temperature of the gas. The mass of these particles is constant, so the particles move faster while the gas becomes warmer. If they move faster, the particles will use a bigger force on the container every time they hit the walls in which it will escalate the pressure of the gas. If the walls of the container are flexible, it’ll enlarge until the pressure of the gas balances the pressure of the atmosphere. The volume of the gas gets bigger as the temperature of the gas goes…

Gases hold huge amounts of energy, and their molecules are spread out as much as possible. With very little pressure, when compared to liquids and solids, those molecules can be compressed. It happens all of the time. Combinations of pressure and decreasing temperature force gases into tubes that we use every day. You might see compressed air in a spray bottle or feel the carbon dioxide rush out of a can of soda. Those are both examples of gas forced into a smaller space than it would want, and the gas escapes the first chance it gets. The gas molecules move from an area of high pressure to one of low pressure.…
