    In order to develop an accounting information system successfully the process has to broken up into phases. The phases are the system development life cycle (SDLC) which consists of the Planning and Investigation, Analysis, Design, Implementation, Follow-up, and Maintenance phases. The planning and investigation phase requires creating a team to investigate the current system and make recommendation to a steering committee. The team primary focus is the find way of handling the user’s request to change, improve or enhance an existing system. The systems analysis phase requires the study team to identifying general systems goals, top management systems goals, and operating management system goals. This details analyzing information needs of the organization and its end users, the systems activities, resources and products, and the capabilities of IS required to meet the information needs of users. Once this analysis is complete the study team sends an analysis report to the steering committee of their recommendations. Once the recommendations are approve the system design phase is started. This is start with the design team doing a feasibility evaluation which includes technical, operational, schedule, legal and economic feasibility. Once the steering committee approves the feasibility of a general system plan the design team can begin work on a detailed system. Detailed system design begins with the design of outputs, and then inputs and processes. Designers may choose a prototyping approach to create the new system. The system design should focus on user interface, data design and process design. Once the system specifications are understood, the system is created.
