Further information: Family planning in India and Demographics of India
India suffers from the problem of overpopulation. The population of India is very high at an estimated 1.27 billion.[1][2][3] Though India ranks second in population, it ranks 33 in population density. Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India, had implemented a forced sterilization programme in the early 1970s but the programme failed. Officially, men with two children or more were required to be sterilised, but many unmarried young men, political opponents and ignorant, poor men were also believed to have been affected by this pogramme. This program is still remembered and regretted in India, and is blamed for creating a public aversion to family planning, which hampered Government programmes for decades.[4]

They tricked thousands of people into being painfully sterilized so that they could prevent the reproduction and multiplication of members of the population considered to be carriers of defective genetic traits and to reduce the population growth rate. In my opinion this is a crime against humanity by definition. I understand that the Indian government needed to take action during their state of emergency but their solution for overpopulation was irrational and very harmful to the citizens affected. I believe there were other reasonable ways to relieve the overpopulation situation. Spreading information about birth control, one way to help overpopulation, was discussed throughout the…

A solution that I think can be helpful is by allowing the people of country to limit themselves to one child. By doing this, they are helping out a bigger problem that future generations will have to face. For instance, in the TED Talk video, the speaker of the video shows an abundance of photos of India and the urbanization of the country. The photos are very similar to the one in the LA Times article. Both show that overpopulation is in motion and society does not understand that. I think that society is not worried about the problem because it is not a current issue that needs to be addressed. Thus, I think a start to diminishing the crowded urban areas of India and population growth is by allowing the people of the overcrowded populations to be limited to the certain amount of children they are allowed to have. A small price is what has to be made to help a bigger…

After analyzing Raymond Carver's "What We Talk About When We Talk About Love," it is easy to see that there are several different ideas concerning true love that the characters in the story are in dispute over. Terri's idea of real love is the most valid out of the group at the table. All of the members of the group are rather confused as to what real love is. Terri is included as one of the confused. However, I believe that she is the closest to understanding what love is. A key piece of evidence demonstrating her understanding of love is her remark to Laura and Nick. She scolds the couple for basing their relationship on physical aspects, rather than emotion or passion. Terri, like the rest of the party, is on her second marriage. Her first husband was an abusive man that beat her, and even dragged her by her ankles around their living room. Terri's current husband, Mel, is a cardiologist that believes in spiritual love, and that between spouses, people are barren and hollow inside, and that he could be married to any other empty person without difference. Mel is rather shielded from emotion between spouses. His only real love lies with his children, unfortunately Mel allows his conflict with his ex wife to block him from calling his them. Terri does love Mel, but she reminisces about her time with Ed. Terri realizes that Ed was full of emotion, and that he was just befuddled and chaotic in his methods of sharing his feelings. This explains his violent behavior and possibly his suicide. During the argument concerning Ed's actions, Terri mentions that Ed "loved her in his own way." It is my opinion that throughout Terri's experiences with different husbands, she sees that while Ed was abusive, he had passion. Mel on the other hand, is not passionate. It seems as though Terri favored marriage with Ed over marriage with Mel.…

The first country that the movie spoke of is India. The film states that India’s population is rapidly growing and will soon pass China as the world’s most overly populated country, with over a billion and a half people. China has always been known as the country that is extremely crowded because of the overpopulation. China’s population as of January 2013 is at 1,354,040,000, which still makes it the most overpopulated country in the world, but India is not that far behind with a population of 1,210,193,422 (Population in China 2013, 2013). The Chinese government has tried to help with trying to sustain the population by implementing a “one child rule”. The “one child rule” basically is when a family is not allowed to have more than one child. This leads to the next issue, women’s health and rights.…

    Infanticide

Despite the clear prohibitions against child-murder by all major religions, female infanticide has been for centuries a prominent and socially acceptable event, notably in one of the most populous countries in this world, India. Even today, the extent of the problem is measured in alarming proportions all around the globe: "at least 60 million females in Asia are missing and feared dead, victims of nothing more than their sex. Worldwide, research suggests, the number of missing females may top 100 million." The data is more astounding in India. According to the Census Report of 2001, for every 1000 males the number of females has decreased to 927 in 2001 from 945 in 1991 and continues to decrease. It is clear that the burdensome costs involved with the raising of a girl, eventually providing her an appropriate marriage dowry, was the single most important factor in allowing social acceptance of the murder at birth in India. Nonetheless, in addition to the dowry system, the reasons for this increasing trend have also been attributed to the patriarchal society, poverty and the availability of sex-selective abortion.…

Fertility Continues to Decrease but Still Too High in Some States India’s population continues to grow faster than necessary to replace itself. In its National Population Policy, 2000, the Government of India set a goal of achieving replacement level fertility of 2.1 children per woman nationally by the year 2010. With only a few years left to go, this goal is still unrealized. NFHS-3 has determined that at current fertility rates, India’s women will have an average of 2.7 children per woman, slightly lower than 2.9 children per woman measured in 1998-99 by NFHS2, but still well above the replacement level. Fertility Urban women have already achieved replacement level fertility, having a total fertility rate (TFR) of 2.1, but the TFR among rural women (3.0) is still too high. If all women in India had only the number of children they say they want, replacement level fertility would be achieved. Ten states are already at or below the replacement level of fertility and several other states are close to achieving that level. The total fertility rate is much higher (3 or more children per woman) in 8 states, and is particularly high (3.7-4.0) in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya, and Nagaland. Marriage The percentage of women who get married before the legal minimum age at marriage of 18 years has been dropping over time, but even now 46% of younger women age 18-29 get married before reaching their 18th birthday. More than half of women age 18-29 marry before reaching the legal minimum age at marriage in Bihar (64%), Jharkhand (60%), Rajasthan (58%), Andhra Pradesh (56%), West Bengal (53%), Madhya Pradesh (53%), Uttar Pradesh (52%), and Chhattisgarh (51%). Men get married about six years later than women, but 27% of men age 21-29 got married before the legal minimum age of 21 years for men. Knowledge of Contraceptive Methods To facilitate the informed choice of family planning methods, it is desirable that people are aware of a wide variety of contraceptive methods.…
