13 February 2013 My Dream Trip to Venus

At last I was at takeoff. 5…4…3…2…1…0… BLAST OFF! I was screaming, like I was on the world’s fastest roller coaster. Then in a flash, I was in outer space heading towards Venus. My name is Francesca, I’m 18 years old and it has always been my dream to become an astronaut and make it to Venus. Finally it has come true; my dream has come true. This is the story of how my dream came true. I was four years old when I decided I wanted to become an astronaut and travel in space. I’ve been waiting 14 years for my moment. My dad was an astronaut, but he didn’t want to hire me because he thought I was too young. I began to think that my dream would never happen. Until one day when I was walking back from school, I saw flyers saying a young astronaut under 19 could be elected an astronaut. It was at Plainfield High School. I created my speech and headed out to the high school. After I read my speech to the crowd I could tell they were touched. After a few hours of voting, they announced the astronaut. I won! I was going to go into space! I was going to start my training the next day at the space station where my dad works. I was so excited! Finally my wish came true. After a few minutes I saw my parents in the crowd. They were cheering the loudest. The next day I got up the same time as my dad did. Once we arrived at the space station, they gave me my schedule and uniform. After a year of training and preparing for takeoff, I was ready. I was ready to go into space. 5…4…3…2…1…0… BLAST OFF! I was screaming, like I was on the world’s fastest roller coaster. Then in a flash, I was in outer space heading towards Venus. After moderately short ride, I made it to Venus. Its surface was veiled by thick clouds; it shined with steady bright white light. Its physical dimensions are rather similar to that of Earth; some may refer to it as “Earth’s

There were a lot of requirements in the selection process for being an astronaut. First, you had to be young – between the ages of 25 to 40. Also, you couldn’t be too tall – shorter than 5’11” – or you wouldn’t fit in the spacecraft. You also had to have so much “air time” which I had accomplished in being in the Wars. Also, there were many hard tests both mentally and physically. NASA tested 508 astronauts and I was one of the seven selected. I was so excited and proud to be a part of that program for my Country.…

Sandro Botticelli’s, The Birth of Venus, and Titian’s, Venus of Urbino are two paintings featuring the female nude, Venus as the main figure of the paintings. She is a classical representation of beauty and sensuality. Although these paintings have similar attributes such as the use of linear perspective, chiaroscuro, and their similar period style they have different hidden meanings. The Birth of Venus shows the story of how Venus came to be and portrays different gods and goddesses while in The Venus of Urbino, it is more of an allegory for marriage.…

Found at a Paleolithic dig site in Willendorf, Austria, the Venus of Willendorf is a small limestone figure of a women. 53 years later, in Çatalhöyük, Turkey James Mellaart dug up the Seated Mother Goddess, or Seated Woman of Çatalhöyük. This figure was also clearly a women, but it was larger, and made out of clay as compared to the Venus of Willendorf. Though they came from very different parts of the world, historians soon recognized the striking similarities between the two figures. Despite the differences between where they were found, and the time periods they came from, the two figures had undeniable similarities. Both had largely defined…

When we feel like we’ve failed, we sometimes want to give up in fear that we will get the same result. In 1986, Ronald Reagan knew very well that NASA’s mission to send the Challenger into space had failed. People lost their lives that day. But he stood by NASA and said, “We’ll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.” Reagan encouraged…

The Space Race was huge to society during his youth, and I thought it was awesome to hear about. It was really interesting to me that with little technology, countries were able to send men into space successfully. My grandpa was a teenager at this time so he couldn’t remember everything that happened, but he told me the important parts. When it came to the space race he told me, “when the Russians were first into space, it was a pretty big deal. Nobody in America liked them, so we had to do better. So we decided to go send our own guys into space to see if we could be better than the Russians.” He also told me that the Space Race was a massive rivalry that stood between the United States and the then- Soviet Union which lasted for many years. During recent times, NASA sent a space shuttle, Atlantis, containing people in 2010. The Atlantis space shuttle is the last shuttle that NASA’s program is going to send into space. Over the years, space travel has become more and more advanced. But NASA has went to more of a satellite-base program, which shows why they are going to stop sending humans into…

The Space Race was a period of time in our history that most people today know very little about. Beginning in the mid-1950s and continuing into the 1970s, the fight for superiority between the United States and the Soviet Union found its way into space. The Space Race, while often thought of as a not so secret competition between these two powerhouses to get to the moon, was in fact a public forum where they could demonstrate who was more advanced in technology and military force, and in turn whose politics and economics were better. With the Soviet Union making notable advancements in science and technology, their early start in the race seemed as if it would lead to their inevitable win.…

Space exploration is a vitally important task that helps countries around the globe discover new things about the universe they are a part of and expand the knowledge of students in subjects such as science or Astronomy alike. There are several factors that are to be considered when contemplating the importance of space exploration. One of the debatable questions that comes to mind is how much money can be collected for the cause? Another is addressing the dangers that the astronaut occupation implies, because who doesn’t remember learning about such devastating events like the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986? The final factor we must include when determining the importance of space exploration is the exposure of space exploration in the education system and why it is helpful to learn about historical space endeavors of our country, both its successes and disasters.…
