The switch in time saves nine One of the proverbs I find most useful in life is the one of Thomas Fuller – a British writer: “A stitch in time saves nine”. It is a well known proverb. It is frequently used in conversation. It passes on from one hand to another like a current coin A stitch in time saves nine” is an idiom, which is a phrase whose symbolic or intended meaning is different from the literal meaning of the words themselves. Literally, it means that a single stitch (to fix a tear in…

A stitch in time saves nine The meaning of this age old proverb is quite literal. It effectively warns us against neglect, small faults, imperfections which may develop into big trouble. A small timely effort will prevent more work later. A poet says, “Shun delays, they breed remorse”. Just as it takes a small spark to start a fire, if not put out in time causes great devastation. Similarly the minutest problem if not attended immediately could cause major catastrophe. Time waits for no one ,…

has just started wearing out, if we stitch it at that very time, it may last well, for some time. But on the contrary, if we avoid stitching at that time, then, after a few days, the whole dress may become a jumble of threads, you may not be able to repair it at all. Similarly, the proverb is applicable in all other spheres of life. Suppose, one is participating in a horse race. If he does not check the hoofs of his horse at the time of starting, it is very probable, the horse may falter, and…
