A Snowflake Is Winter's Butterfly
A snowflake is winter’s butterfly.

When I awakened, very early, the ground was covered with little pearly snowflakes. They had floated gently from the sky, twirling and whirling. Millions in flight, blanketing the ground with sparkling little pictures traced in a line, and shining whitely. Some magician must have come and by the starlight, worked through all the quiet darkness. I must be dreaming, after what happened…

Daddy told me he had a surprise for me, boy do I like surprises! We were going to hunt for reindeers in the mountains near our house. My eyes immediately set aglow, my heart felt warm and excitement rushed through my body. I was finally going to kill my first reindeer and he will fall before me after my finger pulled that trigger. Although I was just a little girl, I always wanted to go and hunt with my daddy and now was my opportunity so I packed a full picnic basket with lots of freshly baked cookies. I gazed in wonder at my first coat as we were leaving the house.

We walked and talked for hours. Although the air was crisp and stirring, love kept me warm and laughter filled me with unspeakable joy. We had a map and when dad said he was just going to peek if the river was nearby, as indicated on the map, I saw something and ran after it. I ran till my lungs burnt and finally came to a sudden stop. I looked around in horror for my daddy but he was now where to be found. After minutes of searching, which felt like hours, the sun said good bye and the night sky greeted with a very chilly, thin wind.

I was freezing, shivering and shaking like a pudding in a mould. I was colder than the contents of a million ice cream cones. Oh, I could not feel my fingers neither my toes. Wait, there was something but I couldn’t move. It has been hours in this snow storm. It came closer and closer…

A reindeer approached me, pushing his nose against me. I was scared to death and therefore prayed for help. A sudden relief swept over me and the reindeer

Jonas moaned, and whispered to Gabriel “We made it“. Jonas tried to stand, but fell again, into the snow. When he hit the ground, he must have struck a rock, because his knee was throbbing, and the snow beside him had a reddish tinge. The snow danced down like a cloud had just exploded in the sky, covering a foot of the ground. The frigid air could make you shiver in a second. Ice covered the road like an ice skating ring. Oliver knew he shouldn’t be outside but he just had to get out. He loved the winter and was amazed at God's creation. He slowed down while turning the sharp turn. If someone wasn’t careful they could get into an accident on this turn, Oliver thought. Speeding up a little he saw what he thought was a car in the ditch. Oliver hated accidents, but he had to stop. He pulled over and started walking towards the car. It was a blue car that was in really good condition. He hands were numb by the time he reached the car. He opened the door and saw…

It’s being outside past midnight on a winter night. It’s a secret - it’s something we’re not supposed to see. The sky is purple but it’s also white. And why is it so bright out? The streetlamps mix the colors into a dynamic palate, with a hint of bronze. And the snowflakes the snowflakes the snowflakes. They’re frozen. Yes they are literally frozen water but that’s not what I mean. It’s chaos but if you look closer it’s not chaos. Look up. Look closer - they’re suspended in thin air, but every time you exhale they start falling again. It’s hushed. It’s a secret. You’re not supposed to look. You’re supposed to wake up the next morning and look outside while you’re making coffee and think, “Huh. Maybe they’ll cancel classes today”.…

The dogs breath was hot, their faces were covered in blood and feathers as they waited for a drink of water, we picked up our dove and shells out of the powdery dirt field filled with sun flower seeds. With the west Texas sun pouring over our backs it felt like we would never even make it back to the cabin with out the smallest sip of water. We walked on the rocky dirt roads with totes full of birds dragging the butts of our guns as we could no longer hold them up, just waiting for the sounds of our parents vehicles to appear. Just at the time we thought we would have to end up walking miles back to the house the sounds of tires crunching rocks and air conditioner blasting made its way up over the hills. We immediately slumped over the nearest laid down log threw our gear down and watched our dogs crawl to the nearest shade tree, and we waited and waited and waited for the trucks to arrive, as we waited it felt like it took them a fortnight to reach us. As they got to us there was no other thoughts in any of our minds than to get a drink. It didn't matter to any of us what it was along as it was a cool liquid. Reaching into that cold cooler and feeling that freezing cold mist come off the ice hitting us in was the best feeling that we had felt so far that…

My family aboard the boat began to worry for one another safety. We were now in a life-threatening storm on the midst of a furious river. I observed the innocence of a child in my niece as the depressing look of fear surrounded her shivering, cold, wet body. Yet, she remained hopeful and prayed to God for eternal life in Heaven. We cried out desperate prayers while the raging storm pounded our pontoon boat like a boxing match. My grandfather maintained the courage and strength and proceeded to steer the boat in the horrific scene.…

I saw that it has started to snow, I was laying there on my back thinking I’m going to die. I closed my eyes, for the longest moment, nothing happened. It felt like my body didn't give up yet, and there is something I still needed to accomplish. I stood up and dragged myself, trying to look for a taxi or any transportation to get out of here. I examined two red led circles which led me to a car plate.…

On one chilly night in Las Vegas, my brother and I had just landed and got off our plane to see our dad. I remember walking off the plane and back into the airport terminal and hearing the soft and sweet sounds of christmas carollers surround me. Their voices seemed to follow us as we walked back to the parking garage to head home. It was a short distance but a long drive due to the hectic city traffic. I don’t remember much of the drive because I had slept most of the way home. Finally, we arrived at the house and we greeted the rest of our family.…

Similar to the suburban street I grew up on, but in lieu of cookie-cutter houses, there stood wood cabins with yards covered in snow in place of stale Bermuda grass. The reddish-orange light emanating from the towering street lights pierced through that white fog and gently illuminated the area. Exiting the car I was overwhelmed with a flurry of new sensations. The gently falling snow absorbed all of the sounds I was used to hearing in a residential area. The low hum of passing cars, birds singing from the trees, even the sound of blowing wind appeared to be muffled and silenced by the steady falling snow. I felt enveloped in a cool, however familiar blanket. The smell of wood burning was coming from every direction as each house I looked at had a thin, grayish plume gently rising from the chimney signaling warmth and comfort for the many nestled up. Looking down the street towards the way we came in, I noticed how freshly plowed it was. A thin layer of snow and ice, like icing on a cupcake or the glass top on my parent’s nightstand, covered the street while a pile of snow that could have swallowed me alive, sat on the sidewalk. Feeling taunted, I stood there and weighed my options. Chest deep mounds of frozen crystals begged me to dive in and lose myself. Surrendering myself to the temptations before me was only hindered by the fear of the wrath my parents would surely show. But had that ever stopped me before? Ignoring the…

It started as the first weekend of winter break. I was running as fast as my twelve year old legs could let me. My dad was parked outside the house with the truck loaded with camping supplies. I leaped into the truck and we were off. We were heading north to spend our weekend in Flagstaff, Arizona. We arrived to our destination around supper time. The evening trees had a small eerie glow to them. The only light that you could see was from our man made fire and…

As I crossed the road with my dog Henry, I could feel the frigid winter breeze on my face. Then I felt a snowflake land on my nose like a plane landing after a long flight. I didn’t like this cold weather at all but I had heard many children around me cheering and laughing. I heard things like “woohoo it is snowing” and things like “oww don't throw snowballs at my face”. That last one made me chuckle a little bit when I had heard it. Then I heard someone yell my name, which is Brian by the way. So I turned around and felt a big snowball hit my back.…
