A Raisin in the Sun
In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, there is a family that is expecting a large check because of the death of a family member. A mother and her son are arguing about what is to happen with the money since they both want to do something differently. The son, Walter, wants to invest the money towards a liquor business but the mother, mama, wants to use the money to buy a house for the family. Mama believes her choice is the right thing to do and that Walters choice was not Christian like. There is only enough money to do one of those things since a part of the money is for Beneathas schooling. In the end, mama ended up putting a down payment on a house and gives Walter the rest of the money to do what he wants with it. Walter wants to start a liquor business but his partner ran off with the money and the money for Beneatha’s school. The family was saddened by this but they tried to move on and start new in their new house.

One value that mama has is religion. Mama, especially, likes to follow Christianity. Walter and Beneatha don’t seem to care much for religion since Walter wants to use the check to invest on a liquor store and Beneatha said it herself that she did not think much of god. Mama makes sure her children don’t think little of religion and tells the family that they will be moving to a new house for the family to live in. Mama felt that getting a house that the whole family could benefit from was the Christian choice. Walter in the end though seemed to have put religion into consideration because he refused to move out of the neighborhood just for money. Mama and Ruth were also happy that they were moving into the house.
