Dreamers
Dreamers: people who are guided more by ideals than practical considerations. Robin S. Sharma says, “Dreamers are mocked as impractical. The truth is they are the most practical, as their innovation lead to progress and a better way of life for all of us.” All “dreamers” have a belief in what they want to accomplish, because they have the vision of the result to keep them motivated.
We were all once kids with those crazy ideas of becoming a superhero, or a princess in a huge castle. Our parents let us believe it, but they knew it would eventually not happen. The minds of children run free with imagination, and there is no stopping it. For example, before every shower I took, I would run around naked with a cape and scream “NAKED BOY!!!” Don’t ask me why, but the point is that my mind was all over the place. It paid off in the future because now I am really creative, and my mind is always open. Even though I didn’t achieve my dream of becoming the first naked superhero, I have the vision and strong belief to get me to where I want to be today. Unfortunately, life isn’t like Peter Pan where we can stay in our kid days for eternity.
Eventually we will need to face the real world and go to school, and start figuring out what we want to do for a living. College is the perfect breeding ground for this. For some people, I know they are just looking for partying and sex, but then you have the smart, bright mind like Beneatha. In A Raisin in the Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry, Beneatha dreams of going to college and becoming a doctor. Her brother, Walter, heckles her about how she should just give up her dream and become a housewife; but Beneatha doesn’t let this affect her because she is smart, confident, and a believer. She keeps her vision of where she needs to get and doesn’t let anybody alter her decision to make her dream a reality. College is done and it’s time to start your

In Lorraine Hansberry’s play, “A Raisin in the Sun,” she does a great job of intertwining Langston Hughes’ poem “Montage of a Dream Deferred,” to incorporate her underlying theme of dreams. In his poem, Hughes asks "What happens to a dream deferred?" and then goes on to list the different things that might happen to a person if his dreams are put "on hold." His overall point is that whatever happens to a postponed dream is never positive. Meanwhile, the question Hansberry poses in her play is, "What happens to a person whose dreams grow more and more passionate — while his hopes of ever achieving those dreams grow dimmer each day?" Dreams get put on hold for many different reasons but in the case of the Youngers, it was their home environment that ensured that none of them would be able to accomplish their ultimate dreams.…

The American Dream mean so much too so many but in very different ways. If you surveyed individuals to get a definition of the American Dream, I’m certain that the answers would be very diverse. This I attribute to the Dream being an individual thing and not one that can be defined by all individuals in the same manner. In this paper I orchestrate to show the dreams of several characters as described in two works, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry and Dreamer by Charles Johnson. In both of these works, albeit the dreams were different for these characters initially, the cessation result was for the same purposes. Those purposes being unity, prosperity, and serenity.…

Some people have the opportunity and easier access to make the American dream a reality, for others it remains just a dream. A dream that is deferred by many obstacles and such. Larry Hughes poem, a dream deferred describes this situation. In Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun, the Younger family each have dreams that they want to fulfill but is disrupted because of family selfishness and family issues. Each character had different dreams of their own. Big Walter, Walter Lee, and Mama Younger and the effects of their dreams on the family’s morale. Hughes uses a metaphor of a raisin to describe neglected hopes and dreams, which in turn is reflected in Hansberry’s exanple of the Younger family and their greed to fulfill the American…

Indeed we were all influenced by characters with superpowers, believing one day we can grow up, and one day use powers such as those of Superman or Spiderman to one day save the world. However as we mature, we eventually learn that we may not have a supernatural power, but we all have a mind of our own, where we can create opinions and thoughts and use those beliefs as superpowers of our own to influence the world as it is today, for a better tomorrow. An example of this is…

Going to college is considered to be one of the most important parts of a person’s adult life. Lee focuses on this unnecessary pedestal that the college experience is put on. Kids treat it as an excuse to party and do not place the same level of importance on it as their parents do. Lee had this realization with her own son when she thought about how she was “paying $1,000 a week for this pleasure cruise” (52). This lead her to pull her son out of school until he was ready to go back and be serious or find a job to occupy his time more efficiently. Her son went on to have many different jobs. They were not the most glamorous, but taught him independence and how to be responsible with his own money. Lee argues that this life path got her son to a fulfilling place where he was enjoying what he was doing and had found a good job where a promotion was in his near future (2). This end result is typically why students go through college in the first place.…

“Consult not your fears but your hopes and your dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what it is still possible for you to do.”- Pope John XXIII. Everybody has dreams or goals that they want to achieve in order to better their future, or the future of their family. Everybody also has challenges that they have to overcome in order to make these hopes and dreams come true. An example of this can be seen in Lorraine Hansberry’s most notable and landmark play A Raisin in the Sun. This groundbreaking play is about the younger family who are a poor black family that lives on the Southside of Chicago. In this play Walter, Elaine, Beneatha have…

From the time we enter kindergarten until the time we exit college we are poked and prodded and led in the direction of the average; of the middle-class. Athletic dreams are squashed at an early age save the very few exceptional talents, artistic pursuits deemed unnecessary unless you are the second-coming of Picasso or Shakespeare, traveling and seeing this incredible world first hand is to be put off in favor of your "education" and "real life".…

Former successful Olympian, Gail Devers, once said “Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication” (Gail Devers, Brainy Quotes). Dever’s words resonate as she inspires those who usually let obstacles keep them from chasing their dreams. As children with an overactive imagination, nothing seems out of reach. Somehow, as we grow older, we begin to notice our strengths and weaknesses and we end up letting go of our old dreams and moving on. Growing up, I fanaticized over what I would do as an adult. Those fantasies ranged from a world-famous pop star to President of the United States. Through all those times of make-believe speeches and singing into a hairbrush, one of my…

The idea of living, “The American Dream,” has shifted quite a lot since past generations. In the past, the American Dream was thought to be an easy thing to achieve, but now, teenagers are coming to the realization that it is more difficult than it used to be. College is one of the most important things to achieve the American Dream, and college is not cheap or easy, and this has become a hard reality to teenagers of today’s society. College is not the only factor in living the American Dream, though. Money in general is very important; having a great job makes people money, or just growing up in a wealthy family. Sometimes, money can get people farther in life than college is able to. If someone does not have the financial funds to attend college (or to live without college), attaining the American Dream can be much more difficult.…

It’s easy to make a goal rather than to achieve it. However, with determination one can succeed in accomplishing it. I have accomplished one of many goals in my list and that's to attend college. In my family not a lot attended college or even finished high school, so accomplishing this goal is a big subject of matter to my family.Getting this far is even a big accomplishment in my eye’s, especially when you break free from an assembly line of generations that never had attended college. The feeling is still overwhelming, mainly because I’m the first of many generations in my family to accomplish something big like…

In terms of dreamers and realists, I imagine the dreamer to always be wondering. Feet dangling just a few inches shy of gravity; the dreamer dares to look the sun in the eyes, and worships the moon for the peace it provides. The realist would be rooted to the ground like a bud in the soil – but by choice – it is content, it is striving not for more, but perfecting what they already have.…
