A Proposal: A Good Man is Hard to Find
In 1953, the short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” was published in the
anthology Modern Writing I by Avon Publications. Around the year 1955, a collection of
short stories by Flannery O’Connor became published. The themes of these stories range
from baptism to serial killers and then to human greed and exploration. For the majority
of these novels, the main character undergoes a spiritual change due to violent scenes. In
1960, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” was collected in the anthology The House of
Fiction, published by Charles Scribner’s Sons. This novelette became the most well
known of O’Connor’s works because of its publications in numerous anthologies.
O’Connor took her story title from a blues song “A Good Man is Hard to Find”. This
song was popularized by a singer, Bessie Smith, after being written by Eddie Green. At this time, morals played a big role in society.
At the beginning of the story, Grandmother wore a navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white violets on the brim. Also, she had on a navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print. Her collars and cuffs were white trimmed with lace. The necklace she was wearing had a purple spray of cloth violets pinned to it. This hat and outfit was a symbol of her moral code. Grandmother just wanted her surrounding audience to be aware that she was a lady, but she also would have done anything just to keep the misfit from killing her. Once the misfits happened to kill grandmother’s family, she took off her hat and dropped it to the ground. The self imagine of being a lady quickly dissolved once the hat hit the pavement. Sometimes ideal morals become overbearing and turn you into someone that you really aren’t.
I think it would be interesting to explore how the social class structure affects the moral codes as an individual. Morality speaks of a system of behavior in regards to standards of right or wrong behavior. Morality standards have became a complicated issue in the multi-cultural world we live in today. Not only is our conscious affected by morality, but also our behavior and our society. Sometimes a person may use morality as their ultimate destiny due to their selfishness. Human beings try to overcome hardships that they rely on to survive rather than trying to change their own situation for themselves. Morality plays an enormous impact on our everyday decisions. These choices happened to be moved in a forward direction by our conscious. Overall, we must decide for ourselves when our conscious originates thus making each and every person unique.

The article focuses on the characteristics of a misfit and his relationship to a grandmother and the mysteriousness of God in Flannery O'Connor's novel "A Good Man Is Hard to Find." The novel is about a search for a good man among no apparent candidates and the goodness of God. The placement of the misfit with two other thugs comprises an infernal perversion of the Trinity. The grandmother delineates her role as grace deliver and her ascension after the misfit confesses his need for Jesus Christ.
