A Portrait of Mona Lisa
Art is a traditional work that is painted in many different pattern of objects. Many people create portraits of art as an expression of how they feel. In the modern world, art is shown in different cities, subways, parks and etc. The greatest art was created in the early century and was called a masterpiece. This portrait was known as the greatest masterpiece ever to be painted. It was painted in the 1500’s. The way Leonardo Da Vinci used the lines in the painting was extraordinary. The lines is one of the most important elements of art that abstracted into a great piece of work. The lines did not illustrate any pattern of moving. The lines were mostly a combination of vertical, horizontal, diagonal, and contour lines. Many lines were cured and straight. The lines also varied in thickness. The painting had a variety of color, texture, and continuity. While viewing the picture, I did not notice any gesture lines in which would indicate action of movement of the woman. The artist did a good job of outlining and use contour lines to make the painting a more 3 dimensional. The lady in the portrait had a mystifying gaze. Da Vinci used a shadowing technique at the corners of her lips and eyes that made her look like a real human. This was a new trend in art at this time period. The landscape faded to create depth in the background. The landscape was uneven on both sides of the lady in the center of the portrait. The painting is meaningful because Leonardo Da Vinci created a new pose that still exist until this day. At that time period artist only used full length or side view portrait unlike the “Mona Lisa.” This emphasized evolution in art and inspired other great art forms to be created. Leonardo truly captured the beauty of the lady he painted. Her posture magnetize the viewer’s eyes to her face. The way her hands cross with her shoulders. This is what made the portrait a masterpiece. This masterpiece is very unique and stands out a piece of art that changed art for many years to come.
In conclusion, Da Vinci created an ordinary picture that became a beautiful masterpiece. The Mona Lisa was a well- known piece of artwork all over the world. He created many other drawings that he was recognized for. Da Vinci was a great painter but what made him famous was his drawings.

First off, I like Mary D. Garrard’s opening statement, “I will suggest a way of looking at Leonardo's art that reveals it as indeed abnormal, but in social rather than psychological terms.”, because like the last week class’s lecture, it was very acceptable and tolerable to be flamboyant, or in better words, have girlish features. I agree with Garrard’s thoughts and her thesis about Leonardo da Vinci’s work. Also, Leonardo da Vinci made the women in his paintings as intelligent creature(s), and equal to their male counterpart. We can see this from da Vinci’s Ginevra de' Benci, where he wrote in Latin, VIRTVTEM FORMA DECORAT, which mean beauty adorns virtue. Also, one can point out the Lady with an Ermine, of Cecilia Gallerani, who da Vinci had considerably respect for. The whole painting overall is quite busy and artist put lots of details in each component. Human’s figures are large and take almost the whole space of the painting. The information was retrieved online and in the book. With Leonardo’s Mona Lisa the picture is not quite common for the Renaissance era. The face is turned nearly frontal; the shoulders are turned ¾ towards the viewer and the hands are included in the image. (Khan, 2006) The Mona Lisa is a 2-Dimentional work of High Renaissance Art and the materials used to create it were oil paints, a cottonwood panel, and Leonardo’s mighty hand and paint brush. The style that was used was a Sfumato and atmospheric perspective. Sfumato- a Smokey haziness to soften outlines and create an atmospheric effect around the figure. Leonardo was one of the first ones to use this technique in Florence, Italy. The painting was painted using a technique called Chiaroscuro. I did an analysis on the irises. The subject matter is the same for both pieces. The first painting portrayed a highly realistic and very detailed iris while the second painting, by Georgia O’Keeffe, is painted to fit her unique style. The first painting is very strict in portraying realistic shadows, lights, and colors. The artist did a tremendous job with their technical skill, showing the browning holes of the green leaf and the velvety texture of the indigo petals.
