A MOTHER'S LOVE

once on a rainy night Shambhu Chitrakar, a famous story writer, was writing a story to be published by next week. He had begun to write the story, when suddenly he heard a knock on the door "Who is at the door?" he asked, but there was no response. "Must be my dream", he said to himself 'knock knock'; he heard the knock on the door again. This time, without even asking who it was, he went and opened the door. At the door, he saw a lady dressed in white from top to bottom, her whole body was covered by her dress and even her legs were hidden. Her appearance was quite weird. Her hair strangled forward which hid her whole face, so Shambhu tried to see her face through her hair. But before he could say anything, she put her hand forward and opened her fist, showing that she waned something like money, food, etc. He understood that she wanted some money. So he went to his room and came back with some coins in his hand. But when he handed her the coins, she simply denied and finally spoke to him "I don't want money, I want some food", she said. Accepting the request Shambhu went back to his kitchen, he couldn't find any good thing to give her but he found some sweets. So he went back to the door and gave her the sweets. Thanking him, she went away. Shambhu then went back to his table and continued writing the story. The next day, he followed his daily routine of going to the bookstore buying a good book and visiting the old age home and spending some time with the old people, telling them different stories. Then again at night when he continued writing his story, the same lady knocked at the door, asked for some sweets and went away. Thereafter everyday he brought some sweets so that he could give her when she came at night. She always came to his house at night time which surprised him very much. After one week passed and that lady still kept on coming, he really became curious and wanted to find out what the reason was. So, one day he called his

I step off the train in Bombay, India. I look down at my feet where I notice my feet covered in dust from the dirty ground that resides beneath me. The dust is swirling around my ankles like a quiet storm and it is then that I notice the quiet around me. So small and tugging at the very bottom of my shirt is how I first noticed her. She is a young, quiet girl and she is staring up at me – dead on. She is begging for attention. At first, I am not sure what to make of her. I look at her, long. I cannot help but notice her protruding stomach and her jutting bones that signal both starvation and desperation. Her clothes are ragged, and ripped, and they make life’s appreciation become real. I glance around and see hundreds of both children and adults looking the same way. She pulls her hands to her mouth signaling she is hungry and asking for food. It was then, in a mere moment, life seized around me.…

David Michael Kaplan Another postcard from you today, Mother, and I see by the blurred postmark that you're in Manning, North Dakota now and that you've dated the card 1961. In your last card you were in Nebraska, and it was 1962; you've lost some time, I see. I was a little girl, nine years old, in 1961. You'd left my father and me only two years before. Four months after leaving, you sent me—always me, never him—your first postcard, of a turnpike in the Midwest, postmarked Enid, Oklahoma. You called me "My little angel" and said that the sunflowers by the side of the road were tall and very pretty. You signed it, as you always have, "Your only mother." My father thought, of course, that you were in Enid, and he called the police there. But we quickly learned that postmarks meant nothing: you were never where you had been, had already passed through. in the wanderings only you understand. A postcard from my mother, I tell my husband, and he grunts. Well, at least you know she's still alive, he says. Yes. This postcard shows a wheat field bending in the wind. The colors are badly printed: the wheat's too red, the sky too blue—except for where it touches the wheat, there becoming aquamarine, as if sky and field could somehow combine to form water. There's a farmhouse in the distance. People must live there, and for a moment I imagine you do, and I could walk through the red wheat field, knock on the door, and find you. It's a game I've always played, imagining you were hiding somewhere in the postcards you've sent. Your scrawled message, as always, is brief: "The beetles are so much larger this year. I know you must be enjoying them. Love, your only mother." What craziness is it this time? my husband asks. I don't reply. Instead, I think about your message, measure it against others. In the last postcard seven months ago, you said you'd left something for me in a safety deposit box in Ferndale. The postmark was Nebraska, and there's no…
