a memorable trip
It was 10 o’clock when we were in the plane. After much waiting we finally boarded the plane to Thailand. This was going to be one of the mostmemorable trips of the year. We, the students of Sekolah MenengahKebangsaan Kota Kemuning, were going to do Scuba Diving and Snorkelingon this trip. It was the first time the school had taken any class for watersports. The students of class 4 Science 2 and 4 Science 3 were going togetherfor this trip. The first day in Thailand went off smoothly. We relaxed on the beach and just generally chilled out. The next day we went for snorkeling on the beach.Though we had an expert along with us, we were still quite worried aboutdoing this sport. We entered the water with a lot of fear but we emerged withthe memory of an experience that would be etched in our minds forever. Ittook a while for us to get used to breathing underwater, but we all finally gotthe hang of it. We saw many kinds of fish in the water along with differenttypes of corals. Some of us even held a sea cucumber in our bare hands and wealmost forgot to breathe.Scuba Diving was on the agenda for the next day. Our anxiety levels wereup again. In snorkeling we were on the surface of the water, but now we weregoing to reach the sea bed. We were going to the bottom of the sea. That was a whole new ball game altogether. Again breathing was a problem. But theinstructors guided us very gently.Once we were on the sea bed, we took in the sights around us. We lookedand marveled at marine life. It was so beautiful and peaceful. Our experience was marvelous. I actually felt like I am an intruder in this silent world. At the end of it, I would like to thank to all of my teachers for taking so muchcare of us.This trip left us with an unforgettable memories. We had the time of ourlives. I'm certain no other trip will match up to this one ever. This is indeedan memorable trip.

It has been 10 years now and that encounter is still vivid in my memory. Looking over the railing of the pier, I see the turquoise water with small waves rippling across the surface. Scanning the pier, I quickly checked to make sure that no one is watching me and jump into the calm blue waters that lay below. Once submerged, I open my eyes and notice the small pearl-like bubbles rising and rays of sunlight streaming into the water around me. The sensation of breathing underwater remains unnerving to this day. Underneath the water lays a large expanse of coral with such an amazing array of bright and vibrant colors that it looks to have been painted; this is my destination today. Approaching the reef, I notice an assortment of lively colored fish, darting through the waters and swimming amongst the coral. For hours, I lingered, silently observing the coral reef community living together in balance and harmony. I did not fully appreciated that night so many years ago, but the ability to breathe underwater provided me with an escape from the madness in the world…

Attention Getter: Breathe slowly. Do not hold your breath. Equalize early and often. Stay off the seafloor. These are a few of the thoughts going through my mind while descending on my first open-water dive in Monterey, California. I hear the eerie silence, interrupted only by the sound of water surging past me. As the salty water trickles through my regulator and into my mouth, I feel the cold rush toward my bare face, the only exposed part of my body. I look through my goggles and see absolutely stunning animals and organisms that most people will only see in books and pictures. I see coral and kelp, fish and sea stars, just swaying with the ocean - their home.…

Once I reached the water and put on my scuba mask and submerged in the water I realized the glamour associated with scuba diving is only for those individuals who are not prone to getting seasick and who enjoy total silence. Furthermore I realized breathing was not an automatic task underwater, it took a lot of exhaustive efforts. After being in the water for about 5 minutes and descending 10 meters, I started to feel the effects of the constant swaying of the ocean on my body. I slowly lost interest in looking around and became increasingly aware of the unease in my stomach. Assuming that the lower we go, the less the effects I hinted at the instructor to go lower; that’s when the experience whet out of control.…
