A Life Lesson I Have Learnt

The tears rolled down profusely as I held the telephone receiver in my hand. My aunt was still on the other end, demanding that I immediately rush over to Grandma Mary’s house. At this instant, my gut instinct responded by tightening up indicating that something was definitely wrong. And it was only then; memories of her youthful days flashed across my mind, reminding me of her mantra, “You must never allow anyone to steal your joy”. And it appeared as if she was standing right beside me, but I knew it was just a fragment of my imagination. I confirmed there and then to myself, I recognized now that I had lost someone, but I would have something with me for life, the value of unconditional love my grandma often displayed amongst her family and her neighbors by extension, and she would always reiterate how much she wanted it to live on.

Granny Mary was like a female Goliath. Blessed with a dark chocolate skin tone, moles and wrinkles canvassed her face which we often referred to as the storylines of her life. But the positivity she gave off could connect a grounded wire on a cold winter night. How she did it, she alone knew. I remember her making ends meet, and providing food for her family after two failed marriages. As the other half of her twin, Uncle John would pay his sister to do his laundry, cook his food and maintain the downstairs of the home which he occupied. And yes, pretty amazing how this money brought up six kids and assisted my sister and I as the two first grandchildren in the family. Not only did she raise her grand kids, but the entire neighborhood’s children were taken care of by “Aunty Mary” also, a name she would always be remembered by. I can still recall how many days the neighbor’s kids will come without food or clothes, but when they left, their tummies were filled, and late evening shower already taken. We would

In “I am Writing Blindly,” Roger Rosenblatt analyzes why a man would choose to write to his wife during his last dark moments aboard a submarine. If I were faced with a similar situation to those Rosenblatt describes in his essay, I would write to three individuals who have had an impact on my life. The first person I would write to would be my grandma. I would choose this person because my grandma raised me since I was born. She treated me with an abundance of care that I thought she was my mom. Whenever I’m sick, I would go to her house and she takes care of me. My grandma is always my number one fan. She never missed a basketball game, concert, award ceremony, homecoming, prom and my birthdays. I’ve always celebrated all of my birthdays…

Lying on her deathbed , she contemplates that “She had spent so much time preparing for death there was no need for bringing it up again”(2). Even when approached with death she felt like she had to be in control of even the littlest thoughts. Her extreme propensity to control presents a psychological dependency; her urge to control may stem from the loss of her loved ones such as her husband John, her fiancé George, and her child Hapsy. The point of view changes occasionally switches to first person to emphasize the focus on Granny Weatherall’s desires and thoughts at specified time; for example in the middle of a description of George’s abandonment the author adds in, “No, I swear he never harmed me but in that.”(3). Because this information is directly from Granny’s perspective, it demonstrates her deepest thoughts: her need to convince herself that she is not hurt by the abandonment. She tries to suppress the unpleasant pain of the sudden abandonment in order to move on. Because she could not control the jilting by her fiancé, she instead tries to control her emotions not allowing herself to be hurt. To compensate for the unexpected…

On August 28th of this year, my grandfather passed away. He was 94 years old and died peacefully in his sleep at his home in the Dominican Republic. Three weeks later, on September 16, his wife and partner for 60 years, my grandmother, passed under similar conditions. While I cannot say for certainty, I believe she died of heartbreak. She was never the same after losing her partner, her best friend and the love of her life. My family and I were informed via telephone the day after their passing because their rural community of San Cristobal is frequently without phone service. I remember both phone calls rather vividly, as my rather had placed both on speaker phone. I remember the heartbreak that I felt, the devastation, the loneliness, but I do not remember anyone asking what date and time either of them passed. Instead, we all cried together and embraced each other. Particularly in the loss of my grandmother, I realize how death can impact a person's soul. My…

My mother was with me and introduced me to the woman, and then she left, stating some difficulty with my grandmother. And so I sat across from the wrinkled, alien figure right now. Her eyes were cloudy, and if I didn’t know better, I’d say she was blind. She was ruminating on her own sons and daughters, who I’m probably supposed to recognize. She began spouting a long, almost seemingly prepared diatribe about how they had all grown up and moved away, becoming lawyers, doctors, musicians. She may have been the most lonely figure I have ever seen. “An’ Sandy’s had two children, you can see ‘em on the wall there. I’ve never really had the chance to meet ‘em, but they seem lovely. I’m sorry for the mess, after Bill passed, I haven’t really cleaned up too much. Why would I? Ha. They say, they say that family is everything, that that’s what keeps you going. I think that’s nonsense. People drift away. They die, grow old, or just plain decide to not talk to you anymore. If you rely on family, you’ll end up like me.” Her cloudy eyes began to rain. “You’re young. You can still decide how you wanna live your life. Me, I’m done. I’ve seen the end, and it’s comin’ fast. And I’m terrified! You see these old people talk about how they’ve come to accept death or whatever. No, I’m not one of them. Every single second of every single day, every single piece of me is screaming that this isn’t true. That it’s not going to end this…

She did not take crap from anyone, she was feisty and she would let you know what she thought of you. I remember as a child, she would tell us about growing up in the Great Depression. She would talk about how hard it was during this time. She also talked about growing up without a lot of food. She used to make the best brown beans and cornbread which she learned how to make because during the Great Depression, it is all they had to eat. She talked about eating them at least twice a day for months. She was a homemaker most of the time and she had only one job (outside of the house and farm) working in the laundry at St. Mary’s Hospital in West Virginia. She would milk the cows and raise a garden every year. She had been raised in West Virginia and then she moved to South Webster, Ohio, in her…

When I was 11, my aunt passed away. My older sister and I had to become a kind of mother and father to my baby sisters because my mom and dad were hysterical and a little irrational. We had to prepare meals, change diapers, and make bottles. It was really hard on us and I can relate to the story. In “Too Soon a Woman” Dorothy M. Johnson, Mary becomes a full time mother and has to watch over three kids by herself with no food and not much water. While facing the hunger, she has to look for food. She finds a mushroom that could be poisonous but she eats it anyways to make sure it’s ok for the kids, she shows she is willing to protect them at any cost. Throughout the story Mary shows she is motherly in many ways.…

On October 9th, 2013, my Grandmother died from cancer. Two days later we were at the funeral home a couple of minutes away from her house in urban Philadelphia. When we got out of our car I felt a strong brisk of wind and a cold chilling sense down my spine, “This isn’t going to be a good day.” I thought to myself and walked up the ramp and into the funeral home. I immediately noticed an overwhelming smell. Like elders and salt, probably from the tears that were shed here. I looked around and walked over to the waiting room, the TV was previewing photos of her getting older throughout the years and played her favorite band faintly, ABBA. After the compilation of photos ended, it was time to go into her room. I soon noticed that the curtains let in beams of light through the small design on the top corners and the middle, forging a cross. They shined brightly, it looked like the light beams were telling us that heaven was fetching her soul from her body, as my mother said. Later, we hastily, but bitterly went through the process of all her daughters (my aunts) and her brother (my great uncle) saying their goodbyes…

Everything was right and in its own place until an unexpected event happened and everything changed. I was 15 years old the time my grandmother died on July 9, 2012, 8 months to go before I will be a graduating student from high school. I can clearly remember the night before she passed away, I was very tired and exhausted in doing school works so I planned to sleep earlier to have enough rest and energy for tomorrow’s activities. My grandma was calling either me or my sister, I heard her calling but I didn’t respond because I unconsciously fell asleep and thought that my sister went to her and asked if she needed anything. When nanay calls anyone of us it means that she needs help or something that will help her feel comfortable. I didn’t think that it will be the last time she will be calling us for help. My heart is full of regrets because I didn’t come to see her and asked her if something was wrong…

It was a bone chilling January night; my mom received a call at about 11:15 PM, a call that changed my life forever. My Aunt June was on the other line. She was crying so hard my mother could barely understand her. Through the sobbing my mom finally understood that Brian, my cousin, had been in a horrible accident and she didn’t know how bad it was. My mother jumped out of the bed after she hung up the phone. She screamed up the stairs at my sister and me; it was a nerve shrilling scream. I could hear fear in her voice. My mom was always yelling at us growing up if we forgot to do something. She would even get us out of bed to finish something that wasn’t done completely. This particular scream was not one of those. She wasn’t about to say, “Sonja, you are in trouble”; it was “Help, help”. I ran down the stairs in total fear of what was to come. She told my sister and me about the accident. At this point no one really knew what had happened or how bad it really was. As mom was running out of the house, she looked back yelling, “Stay by the phone. I will call you as soon as I know something.” At this point I felt overtaken with fear…

My grandma was a brave women. she never said die.My favourite place to go is the mountains. I like it there because it’s so peaceful and quiet. I just go to get away from everyone and all my stress. Although this makes it a great place to go, my main reason for loving the mountains is because it’s where my Grandma’s house is. My Grandma is the greatest person I’ve ever known. She has had an amazing life and put up with so much, but all of it has helped her to grow up and become so strong and intelligent.. As soon as we got there my grandparents would be waiting on us and greet us like they haven’t seen us in years. My grandma would teach me how to cook and let me help her cook dinner every night we were there. After dinner, we would sit outside or in the TV room and she would tell me stories about her life. As I have stated, my grandma is the strongest person I know. Growing up, she had to put up with a drunken father. Her parents were very strict and she had a hard life. She always promised herself she would get out of that town and make something of herself, and one day, she did. My grandma saved every penny and left one day. She got a job as a lawyer’s assistant and then she met my grandfather. They have been together ever since then. Now that I am older, when I go to visit her I get to hear all the real stories about her life, some good and some not so good, and they have influenced me so much and made me who I am today. I’ve heard stories from her first love, who ended up being a bum, to stories about her always standing up for what she believes in. Today, my grandmother suffers from short term memory loss. Even though when I go to visit her I hear the same story every five minutes, it doesn’t bother me; because I know that because of her I am who I am today. I am a strong, independent young woman because my grandma taught me that simply through her stories. She is the greatest and most influential person I know. not by…
