A Legacy of a Hero
The LEGACY of a HERO
“lagi ninyong pakatandaan, na ang kadahilanan ng ating pagbuwis ng buhay ay upang makamit ang matagal na nating minimithing kalayaan mula sa paglustay at pagka-alipin.”
Gat Andres Bonifacio

Andres Bonifacio, known as the “Ama ng Katipunan”, had a rebirth with one of the famous indie actor, Alfred Vargas. Alfred Vargas portrayed Andres' life in the film entitled “SUPREMO”. This film enables the Filipinos to realize how much pain Andres' suffered and how much he sacrificed just for us to get the freedom that we're enjoying today. Andres Bonifacio y de Castro was named after St. Andrew, the patron saint of Manila. He's the eldest of the 6 children of his parents and became the mother and the father to his siblings when his parents died because of Tuberculosis. He's looking for equality and peaceful reform for the Philippines. Supremo shows a lot of hopes. Hopes for the country and hopes for its' countrymen. It is truly undeniable that Andres Bonifacio is a hero. He is a son, a husband, a sibling and a leader. He had experience many challenges in his courageous life. He's a very great leader for his alliance. He never give up on fights. Even they are unequipped, he leads his men to fight for the freedom against the Spaniards. This film, Supremo, also became the eye-opener for us Filipinos that even your friends can betray you. Just like other happenings nowadays. In the latter part of the film, when Andres Bonifacio was killed, I'm confused because according to some historian, Andres was shot as what his brother, Procopio, experienced. But some says that Andres was stabbed to death, just like what was portrayed in the film. I have this question in mind, why we lesser-recognized the heroism of Andres Bonifacio given the fact that he had sacrificed a lot for our country? Why is it that he never had the justice? By the help of this film, Supremo, I'm hoping that Filipinos must now be more curious about the past because it is surely a reflection or a part of the present and the future. Andres Bonifacio, The Supremo, is overly a nationalistic enmity hero of all times.

Different times have had different ways of showing appreciation of those who rise above and beyond. We have called these people numerous things over the years, but a broadened term has defined them for what they truly are: Heroes. Heroes have been around since the beginning of time; from Beowulf in the 5th Century, to Sir Gawain in the late 14th Century, to Superman in the 21st Century. Whether it being scops, professional poets in Anglo-Saxon times, or in media and literature today, we have honored and commemorated these heroes in many different ways.…

According to an on-line dictionary, a hero is defined as a being of great strength and courage celebrated for bold exploits. The definition of a hero has been contorted, lost, and damaged throughout the years. When we think of heroes we think of high paying athletes, rich people, and celebrities. In the real world a fireman charging into a burning building, police officers confronting a gunman, and soldiers sacrificing their lives are all considered as heroes. On the other-hand in the highly-publicized world of sports, Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods was definitely considered a sports hero. However like every great story of a hero there is a rise and fall. Tiger rose to fame, due to his stupendous golfing abilities and also fell from greatness due to infidelity.…

We all know the El Presidente is a historical and educational movie about the First President of the Republic of the Philippines, Emilio Aguinaldo. The movie itself is that, it is not for all Filipinos but for the Independence that the country’s attaining right now. It is a film that has; I mean of course mostly an epic especially the scenes it’s really hard to visualize the happening that occur decades ago. I could say that this film is not good for those Andres Bonifacio admirers or those who likes him the best, because the Bonifacio’s clan in this film is not really in good situation that they are outrage in this film. It is directed by Mark Meily. The main character of the film which in Emilio Aguinado is played by E.R. Ejercito, Cesar Montano as Andres Bonofacio.…

The following essays focus more specifically on Rizal. The fourth essay entitled “the Anatomy of the Anti-Hero” paints two different personas as illustrated by Guerrero and Radaic, both resisting the title of hero. The former painted Rizal’s nationalism as “political rather than social or economic” while the latter claimed he was “anxious, nervous, insecure.” And so, his heroism seemed questionable to Joaquin as Rizal is a Creole, or someone who did not seem entirely embody a Filipino.…

Andres Bonifacio was born in Ilaya, Tondo, Manila and was the oldest child of Santiago Bonifacio and Catalina de Castro. His early education started in Tondo but was forced to drop out because of his parents’ death and that he had to work for his siblings. Despite not finishing formal education, Bonifacio was self-educated. Andres Bonifacio became a passionate Filipino nationalist and when Jose Rizal had established the La Liga Filipina, Andres Bonifacio was a member. When Jose Rizal was deported to Dapitan, he immediately organized the KKK or the “Kataastaasang Kagalanggalangang Katipunan ng mga anak ng bayan”. In Pugad Lawin, Caloocan, Andres Bonifacio together with the thousands of Katipuneros assembled and tore their cedulas. Andres Bonifacio had formed an assembly in Tejeros, Cavite to establish the Republic of the…

Since I first knew of Rizal in a book of Asian history, I have had a question. Why is Rizal the National Hero, not Aginard, nor Bonifacio? Rizal did little except writing two novels. Why? Watching the movie, I thought I had an answer. Historically, his books and his death triggered the revolution activities. But true reason is, I suppose, that Rizal had a universal view on humanity and…

Last year, two films came out in Philippine cinema that totally reflect the disparate perspectives on two historical figures in Philippine history—one about the founder of the Katipunan, and the other about the President of the Philippine Revolutionary Government. I watched Supremo (2012) in an SM cinema on the first week of December, while I saw El Presidente (2012) during the Metro Manila Film Festival. The mayaman vs. mahirap or the matapobre vs. api are socialist storylines long overused in Filipino TV screens and have been, I think, the logical outcome of our historical background with the defined social statification brought here by the Spaniards—that of the white peninsulares and insulares as the higher ups versus the brown indios. These worldviews I think have long mired our values especially when it comes to our choosing of heroes. I have explained my position regarding Andres Bonifacio and the wrong portrayals about him (that popular notion that he was poor, uneducated, etc.) In fact, history attests that Mabini was poorer than Bonifacio. While Bonifacio did not finish school, he self-studied, reading the Rizalian novels, the French work Le Juif Errant, and yes, even the Les Miserables of Victor Hugo (the book was found in his workplace at Fressel and Co. when the Katipunan was found out.) That is why in seeing Bonifacio and Aguinaldo, one must throw away the mayaman vs. mahirap rhetoric. It is a social reality, but in heroics, heroes must be measured by their principles and values consistent with their walk than by their social status.…

    Rizal Movie

Finally, I had watch the movie Rizal, though I wasn’t able to started and ended it well. The story was great. Rizal was too brave to do that in his own country. I think he do that because of his love in the Philippines and Filipinos. He has a lot of pride in his self. His heroic deed was a good example for the Filipino. I understand most of the part but some are not clarrified to me. There’s some scenes that captures my attention, like Rizal studied well and went to different schools and travel the world to finish his studies and to become a doctor and cure his mother, he succeed because of being determined and have a goal he wants to achieved, and also there’s a scene there that he defend the Filipinos against Spaniards, because Spaniards underestimate Filipinos but then Rizal defend Filipinos because he know what a true Filipino is and he’s very proud to be a Filipino, and still we implement this thing and just like what he said in his poem “Ang hindi magmahal sa sariling wika, ay higit pa sa malansang isda”, this is true because even though Rizal went to different places in the world, his heart is still in the Philippines and he influence his life and works to the other people, and still today, even though there we’re millions of Filipinos go to the different side of the world, their heart and soul is still in the Philippines, misses their family and still they speak Tagalog and also they influence the language and culture of the Filipinos to the Americans, they teach some tagalong words and some gestures of the Filipinos that’s why many Americans adopted some gestures and how they look into their life and also the being lovable of the Filipinos, if they really love the person, they give all, they sacrifice, that’s why most of the Americans love and marry Filipino woman, just like Rizal, because of the love to his country, to his family, he sacrifice everything, he give everything, he never ask why things happen, he let things happen and fight for it.…
