In “A Good Man Is Hard to Find”, O’Connor seems to suggest that only through conflicts can the “good” in people be found. The way that the grandmother seems to dwell in the past suggests that she believes that it would’ve been easier to find a “good” man a long time ago. To the grandmother, trying to find goodness today would prove to be very challenging and possibly even useless. Through the use of symbolism, foreshadowing, and metaphors, O’Connor develops the story’s theme.…

How many people do you encounter each day whom considers themselves to be a righteous person? Do you agree or disagree with this persons judgement of their own character? Often a person might hide behind his or her religion as a justification for the actions made in every day life. Perhaps some people may decide that commiting enough positive actions can some how cancel out their negative actions, allowing them to consider themselves a righteous person. In Flannery O'Connors story "A Good Man Is Hard To Find", the author challenges her readers to consider what it truly means to be a "good man" and why these qualities are so hard to find in a person.…

The main idea of Maida’s article is to tie together and explain the common literary devices apparent in Flannery O’Connor’s short stories. There are four reoccurring devices in O’Connor’s work: first, the eyes, which reflect an individuals innermost thoughts and emotions; then the tree-line which symbolizes the division of understanding between the world understood by an individual and the world beyond their comprehension; then the color purple which represents emotional or physical trauma which is often evoked alongside the Sun, which represents divine intervention. In describing these devices Maida also describes the arc of O’Connor’s characters as one in which they begin their journey with a sinful or selfish understanding of life and ultimately are bestowed with an enlightened understanding of life after embracing the love of God, Christian values, or both.…

One of the most compelling and provocative authors of the 20th century, Flannery O’ Connor is known for her violent, yet symbolic short stories. Unfortunately, we only got to see a small selection of writings from her, as she died in 1964 at the young age of 39 from lupus erythematosus. Although she was largely unknown during her short life, she has been posthumously recognized as one of the greatest writers of her time. Terry Teachout, chief culture critic and drama critic with the Wall Street Journal, acknowledges O’Connor as “one of the foremost American fiction writers of the 20th century (55).” Teachout goes on to say, “she is by far the most critically acclaimed of the many Catholic writers who came to prominence…

In Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” the grandmother goes through a dramatic and ironic change of events during a family trip to Florida. O’Connor uses foreshadowing and irony to portray the main conflict. The conflict plays a role that in which the grandmother’s character is transformed for the better due to the traits she had in the beginning of the story.…

As a Catholic author, Flannery O’Connor had as much passion for her faith as for her writing. She was an accomplished and influential novelist who also composed ample short stories prior to her early death at age 39. An only child, O’Connor was raised by her parents, Regina and Francis O’Connor in Milledgeville, Georgia (“Bookrags” Online). She persistently pursued her literary work, publishing her first short story, “The Geranium”, at the age of 21. O’Connor attended the Georgia State College for Women, received her Masters of Fine Arts and just a year later, she published her first novel Wise Blood (“Books and Writers” Online).…

In reality, her writing is filled with meaning and symbolism, hidden in plain sight beneath a seamless narrative style that breathes not a word of agenda, of dogma, or of personal belief. In this way, her writing is intrinsically esoteric, in that it contains knowledge that is hidden to all but those who have been instructed as to how and where to look for it, i.e. the initiated. Flannery O'Connor is a Christian writer, and her work is message-oriented, yet she is far too brilliant a stylist to tip her hand; like all good writers, crass didacticism is abhorrent to her. Nevertheless, she achieves what few Christian writers have ever achieved: a type of writing that stands up on both literary and the religious grounds, and succeeds in doing justice to both.…

"A Good Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O'Connor, depicts a contrast of good and evil however, it shows how the enactment of good and evil is not as evident as it appears. The Grandmother perceives herself as a moralistically good character though her actions deem to create a downfall for the family. On the other hand the misfit is targeted at the audience as an evil character who is a cold-blooded killer; his intentions are justified by his unworldly perceptions of people.…

The setting of the story is never really clear to the reader. The author never really comes out and says where and when the story takes place, but with a few clues an idea is given on a pretty clear setting of “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” The time period begins in the mid-twentieth century. In the first half of the story, the family is at their home in Atlanta, Georgia. The author never really says that they are in Atlanta, but in the story the grandmother writes down that it will take them approximately take them 20 minutes to reach the outskirts of the city. When the family begins on their trip to East Tennessee instead of Florida early that morning, the grandmother observes it’s a beautiful day, not to hot nor cold. They pass up many old plantations and open fields. The grandmother also observes the details in the scenery she describes “the Stone Mountain; the blue granite that in some places came up to both sides of the highway; the brilliant red clay banks slightly streaked with purple; and the various crops that made rows of green lace-work on the ground. The trees were full of silver-white sunlight and the meanest of them sparkled”. –O’Conner. They are obviously in the open country and used to seeing the old plantations because there was really no excitement from the family with the children reading magazines and the mother falling asleep, so with this clue as well gave a hint on where the family was from. During their long road trip the…

I think that Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is written partially in order to convert people who have not yet fully accepted the Christian faith. O’Conner, having a strong upbringing and solid Christian background, wrote this story believing it would help people who do not have a strong moral base and Christian convictions to seriously making the necessary changes. Flannery O'Connor showed deep concern towards the value system of the youth at the time. She firmly believed in helping to guide the youth in a positive direction. Her belief that Christ was no longer a major priority to the people of her generation was a driving motivation. "A Good Man is Hard to Find" shows Flannery O'Connor's concern for the priorities and values of her time.…
