A Drill Sergeant at First
Mark Young is the leader of the painting division in a big hospital. He is in charge of 20 union employees and they report to him. The hospital wanted to change the painting division. Before he start managing the division Mark did an analysis, and found that the services were unreasonable and inefficient. Subsequently, Mark rearrange the section totally, he changed the normal standers of performance and brought a new scheduling procedure. Mark was strict with the staff to get the best performance within the hospital standers. By time Mark was less demanding and loose to his style. He assigned a few obligations to two group leaders who sends all the important information to Mark, however he is always close to communicate with each worker. Additionally, he always invites the workers for food as a weekly habit. Mark Yong has improved the painting department, and every worker in the hospital knew the painting sector as the most productive sector in the hospital. Additionally, the panting services were the highest of any service in the organization with 92% client rating.

1- From the style perspective, how would you describe Mark’s leadership?
Mark has changed how things are managed in the painting department. He changes the normal standards and Insisted on performance. However, he was close to all the staff and with a good relationship with them.

2- How did his style change over time?
When he took his new position at the beginning he was bossy and demanding, but with the passage of time and the stability of performance, he gives some tasks to others and become oversees all details with more communication.

3- In general, do you think he is more task oriented or more relationship oriented?
He insists on performance, but he is more relationship oriented. He says he enjoys working with people and he always wanted to be a coach.

    In this case study Roger Cahill has been acting as the head of mobile division for less than a year. Currently he is struggling as he faces great difficulties adapting BoldFlash to a changing marketplace. The problem really started a year ago when Mr. Jim Harrison appointed the young Roger Cahill to a VP position. Although Roger has led a research project in his previous work, he is only 24 years old and inexperienced to manage a company at VP level.
