Charles Dickens was born in 1812 near Portsmouth, where his father was a clerk in the navy pay offices. His family was very poor and his father was put in prison for debt. Young Dickens was sent to work in 1823 to a blacking warehouse to support his family. Dickens' poor upbringing made him very sensitive to the plight of the poor in society when he was older. Most of the books that Dickens wrote dealt with the issue of poverty; his main aim was to send the message through society that the poor needed charity and generosity. During this period, Victorian readers were thoroughly convinced of the supernatural and omnipotent power of God, making this oval socially embraced through the population. However, many were still forced to go to workhouses and work in the terrible conditions for long hours in exchange for meagre amounts of food, resulting in many poor dying anyway- a consequence that both Scrooge and the victorian reader has to witness in Stave 4 with the death of Tiny Tim caused by poverty.…

Christmas has been with us for a very long time, but NOT as long as some think. Many mistakenly believe that the Christian churches have been celebrating Christmas since the church started on the Day of Pentecost. The truth is, for the first 400 - 500 years of Christianity there is no mention made of a celebration centering around the "birth" of Jesus. The early church DID NOT observe what we know today as Christmas. It wasn't until well into the 4th century that some (NOT ALL) professing Christians started observing Christmas in one form or another. Over the years Christmas was polished over and over to become one of the brightest stones in Christian "theology".…
