The pharmacy retail trade, which is highly fragmented and until now dominated by small chemists, is bracing up for a quick revamp. Big industry houses like Ranbaxy (Fortis), Reliance Retail, ADAG ( Reliance Health Venture), together with other big multi-verticle, multi-format, retailers like Pantaloon (Tulsi) and Subhiksha as well as other regional healthcare players like Apollo Pharmacy (Apollo Hospitals Group), Medicine Shoppee (international drug retail chain), Dial fo Health (Zydus Cadilla), Planet Health (Sagar Drugs & Pharmaceuticals), Life Spring (Morepan), Health & Glow (Dairy Farm), LifeKen (Lifetime Healthcare), 98.4 (Global Healthline), Body Shop (now acquired by French beauty major L`oreal), Guardian Pharmacy (Guardian Lifecare), are rolling out their plans to set up thousands of pharmacies and healthcare stores in the coming three to four years.…

An example of an issue with pharmaceutical drug corporations is the ethics associated with researching the drugs. For example, Pfizer caused an international scandal when they illegally tested a drug to cure meningitis in Nigeria. 11 children died due to not enough research into the effects of the drug on children. This is an ethical issue, as if Pfizer had done effective research, and received correct authorisation, those children could have been saved. Another issue with research is that drug companies only research profitable drugs. In order to stay afloat, drug companies need to produce a billion dollar drug every few years. Pfizer’s main drug is Viagra for example, which has little impact on global health, and so an issue is that drug companies spend more money researching drugs which don’t matter globally, than on diseases which affect the poorer countries.…

Many years ago, India’s pharmaceutical industry was suffering from number of international trade limits due to their violation of intellectual property rights. The Indian companies used to copy patents of drugs made by Western countries and Japan with no responsibility to property rights. This would discourage international investors from investing into India’s drug industry. India was only good for making generic brand drugs because the patents for those drugs were already expired. However, the situation has changed dramatically in recent years due to the rising demand for international trade. Especially, with the induction of India into WTO in 2005, there came the appreciation and protection for property rights. India stopped making those counterfeit drugs. The fact that India is a member of WTO has eased the path for foreign investors to start investing into India’s many industries including drug industry. Due to flow of investments and Western cooperation, India’s pharmaceutical industry has seen unprecedented growth since 2005. According to the case, by 2011, the industry reached $11.5 billion.…

There's a time for everything. For Dr Ramakanta Panda, it was time to build a 'modern hospital' in India. As a cardiac surgeon from the prestigious Cleveland Clinic, US, he was known for his super-safe hands. But his ideas proved too radical for the design team. Whoever heard of picture windows to ward off ICU psychosis? Or counselling areas for patients' relatives? How would cafeteria, convenience store, library, public booth, Internet access, and hotel-like front desk create a "healing experience"? As modernity clashed with convention, Panda whisked the team off to the US to show at first hand what modern hospitals look like. Awed by his passion and armed with 5,000 photographs, they returned to translate his dream into concrete: the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) in Mumbai. Seven years later, Panda, known today as "the prime minister's surgeon", is busy planning yet another AHI. "A modern hospital focuses entirely on patient satisfaction," he says. "India didn't have that culture then. But it's quite standard now," he smiles. Indeed it is.…
