A Book To Love
A Book to Love
“Suits obviously had helped to promote bad government and he was as guilty as anyone for wearing them so steadfastly for twenty years.” Bad political decisions by our government played a huge role in the First World War. Legends of the Fall by Jim Harrison begins during the time of the first World War, and is set in Montana. This story follows three brothers and their father after time spent in the war, and educates us on politics of that time. The material in this book should not be considered suitable for anyone under the age of fifteen, due to violence and graphic deaths. However, this book is an excellent read for someone mature enough to enjoy. Legends of the Fall is a great book because Harrison provides the readers with events that are easy to relate to, and one may feel like being there with the characters. It is also a great book because it is different than many other novels in a very unique way.
Legends of the Fall follows the life of Tristan Ludlow after enlisting in the Great War with his two brothers, Samuel and Alfred. Samuel is dealt with a tragic end to his life, while Alfred is injured. Physically, Tristan is unharmed. However, the readers soon discover that emotionally, Tristan is dealing with some extreme turmoil after his brother’s death. Tristan and his brother return home to their father, One Stab, and Samuel’s fiancée, Susannah. Throughout the novel, the readers will hear of illegal activities, love, Tristan’s betrayal of his brother in the likely choice of a woman named Susannah, devastating deaths, and an unforeseen and quite dramatic ending. “Late that night the ocean again entered Tristan’s dreams,” there is never a dull moment in Tristan’s life, and being a reader that gets to follow him on his journey will leave one unable to put down the novel.
Tragedy and turmoil are a huge part of this story, yet this story is so easy to connect with. The bloody battles of the Great War affected Tristan in one of the most tragic

Jason Helmandollar’s “Backwards Fall” interests me because of the subject of the story. It is something I have always been sadly fascinated by because my grandpa had Alzheimer’s and it was so hard to watch such a wise man basically start acting like a baby. I want to study how the setting, description, speech, and action bring this story alive. This story has different sections of time, so I will discuss each element within each section.…

    The Gift By Li-Young Lee

Li-Young Lee’s, “The Gift” unquestionably communicates several ideas, some rather direct, and others buried within the rhetoric and composition of the poem. Although the meaning (of the poem) may be left to interpretation, one of the most prominent concepts of the story, in my belief, is the gift of love and consequent tradition of offering it to loved ones. In the beginning of the poem, the narrator describes his father comforting him in the painful situation of removing a metal splinter from his hand: “My father recited a story in a low voice. I watched his lovely face and not the blade.” The father’s calm and affectionate demeanor can be further attested to in the second stanza, “...I recall his hands, two measures of tenderness, he laid…

My favourite book is "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway. This story is one of the well-known works of the writer. The author depicts the characters of the old man and the boy and their relations very vividly and skillfully. Santiago, the old man, was one of the writer's beloved characters. The old man was a born fisherman, but he was not a butcher and fished only for a living. He was very lonely. He had a devoted friend - the boy, Manolin. The boy loved the old man for his kind heart, his devotion to the sea. Manolin was like a son to Santiago. He took care of the old man's food and his belongings. The old man was glad to pass his experience to the boy. He looked forward to going to the sea together with the boy. All Santiago's life had been in preparation for the battle with big fish. He knew that he had been born for this and it was time to prove it. A strong man at last had met a strong fish. The battle was a difficult one and full of danger. Though the sharks had eaten the fish and nothing had left but the backbone, the old man had morally won the battle. Santiago's words "man can be destroyed but not defeated" are the main idea of this story. "The Old Man and the Sea" is a masterpiece for its imaginative language and the description of…
