In the essay "Georgia O'Keeffe" Joan Didion's thesis is that style is character, and what you create reflects who you are. I do agree with her thesis; everything you do is a reflection of yourself. There is no way to have something you say or do or create to not have some part of you included. Your clothes, your art, the way you talk, everything that originates from you shows your character.…

Unconventional, visionary, “ugly chic”; these are all words used to describe the undoubtedly influential Miuccia Prada. Miuccia Prada’s footprint on the fashion industry is both significant and enduring in an industry where trends and designers fade out as quickly as the come in. Although Prada is often noted as the anti-thesis of a typical designer, or the anti-fashionista, her work as a designer and artist influences and inspires both the traditional and untraditional (Miuccia Prada: The Reluctant Fashionista, n.d). Miuccia Prada has created a strong identity for herself as a designer who combines the avant-garde with the ready-to-wear, the ugly with the delicate, luxury without the sex appeal, and a classicism that often embraces outlandish fusions of colors and patterns. She describes her own work as a way to “express, in a simple banal object, a great complexity about women, aesthetics, and current times”(Lovinski, 2010). Even with no formal background or training in design, Prada still creates fashions that are ahead of the times, constantly pushing herself to new limits and often embracing what she even typically dislikes to find beauty in the unordinary.…

Madonna first arrived in the national popular culture in 1984 with her song "Borderline". She moved very quickly in the ensuing years to make several records (many of which have gone multi-platinum) and to take several world tours with sold-out concerts, and has caused quite a bit of controversy in what she has done in the public eye. Examples include posing nude for Penthouse magazine (and announcing afterwards that she was not ashamed for doing it), marrying (and subsequently divorcing) actor and media-avoider Sean Penn, creating a fashion trend (which was primarily popular with teenage girls), and making truly atrocious movies which the critics hated and the people refused to see (the only two exceptions are Dick Tracy and Truth or Dare, her controversial yet fascinating self-documentary about her tour of the same name). It seems that Madonna seems to enjoy attention, good or bad, and it seems like she feeds on her own controversy. Her songs, and the music videos which accompany them, are no exception to this. However, the things she does and the images she projects requests contemporary society to reflect on itself, and to possibly re-create itself in innovative and inventive styles. Perhaps she always breaks with convention because she sees things in a different light than the rest of society. This essay shall focus on the video which accompanies the title track from her 1989 album, "Like A Prayer," which certainly had its share of controversy.…

Lady Gaga came into performance after her first album “The Fame” was released in 2008. It included the hit “Bad Romance” and that album sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Gaga is also recognized for her unique sense of fashion, Performance, and music videos. She was included in Times annual list of the most influential people in the world. Forbes also placed her in number seven in their annual’s list of the world’s 100 most powerful women. Bad Romance was one of her first music videos, it is a very symbolic and it has many hidden messages. In this music video Gaga describes the dark side of the music industry symbolically by representing herself as a sex slave. The main message in this music video is, Gaga is willing to do anything in order to get into the music industry, even if that means she’ll become a sex slave. Listening to the song itself makes us think that she is in love with some psycho, but watching the video makes it clear that, in fact she is in love with the fame that she will get in the music industry. There were many technical features in it like filming and also the fact that it was so influenced by fashion. Another thing would be the content of the video which actually represented Gaga and the women with her as sex slaves. One other thing to consider would be the story of the video and how it illustrates the lyrics of the song in an odd way.…

Lady Gaga is a very successful artist due to numerous reasons. Initially, her records are distinct from other singers. She wrote her own songs with lyrics that encourage people to be who they really are and proud of it. Also, her visual approach to present her music is very bold and fascinating. “Born this way” music video is a perfect example of her uniqueness. Unsurprisingly, the outrageously creative style of this talented star has played an important role in her career. The outfits wore by this artist are always remarkable and outstanding for instance her famous meat dress had almost broken the internet in 2010.
