After watching the film A&P in comparison to the discussion in the classroom, a lot of the topics are current trends and issues in the 20th century. There can be much discussion about many things in the film. After watching the film however rather than from the reading and discussion in class, I pictured things differently in my own mind. Upon first trying to relate it to the 1960’s, I actually thought the film was pretty modern and could be possible in today’s times, depending on a store and its’ management, whether an independently owned little store or a big box grocery store.

The main character, Sammy, who displays an 18 or 19 year old male teenagers’ feelings are very much alike as all boys during the adolescence years. John Updike himself reported in his interview of when he was young and married and 29 years of age that he could relate to these types of feelings and fantasy dreams which prompted him to write the story. I could not envision however in the 1960’s of actually seeing any young girls in bathing suits that would be daring enough to walk in a store dressed in such a way. Personally, I do not recall seeing any young teenage girls do this during those times. I did grow up in the 1960’s. I recall most young women being more demure and even seeing something such as this might result in a police arrest possibly. Perhaps I am being naïve as I was a young child during this period but don’t recall families allowing their young girls to behave in such a way.

Sammy appears to be bold in that time period in my opinion of how he chose to just quit his job because he didn’t believe the same beliefs as his manager, Mr. Lengel. While growing up in the 1960’s, many children and adults alike, from what I saw and remember were taught to work hard and success would then follow. Many of the male adult family relatives were away serving in

If a movie states, “based on a true story”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all history or facts portrayed in the movie are true. Most of the time directors of the movies place such words in the beginning of the movie to gain more support of the public and depict instances that may or may not be one hundred percent accurate. Taking history down a creative route can have its positive notes and its negative. Portraying history in a movie allows filmmakers to make a point about a modern issue or promote an ongoing historical topic. Just exemplifying history in a movie, doesn’t depict the fact that it is accurate. “Gangs of New York ” directed by Martin Scorsese in 2002, and set in 1863, explains the Irish immigration and ongoing Civil War. This movie is quiet t historically accurate, but still has some minor inaccuracies.…

The short story “A&P” was written by John Updike in the mid-1950’s about a young man trapped in a planned middle class lifestyle that he wanted out of. During this time in history most teenagers around Sammy’s age were responsible for earning a living to support their families. Sammy is a young man who works in a grocery store in the same small town of which he grew up in. One day, during one of his hot summer shifts three young women walked in the grocery store. Following their arrival, Sammy began to notice how they were dressed. He noticed they were in revealing clothing like they were going to enjoy themselves a day at the beach. Not being accustomed to seeing this type of dress from women in particular, it drew a great…

With his decision to quit his job, Sammy shows that he is not willing to conform to the society around him. The time set in this story shows that Sammy lived in a society where the only options for a boy his age would be to work, go to college or enlist in the army. It is also clear that Sammy lives in a small town where everyone knows everybody; he gives a hint of this when he says Lengel and his parents had been friends for years on page 96.…

During the ‘roaring 20s’, several young women decided to defy their long practiced religious beliefs and go against everything they’d ever known. These women were tagged as ‘flappers’. Generally flappers were around 17 years old and were unwed. Many of the girls had chosen to accept certain trends from the modern (for the time) male magazines. By day, flappers walked the streets in trousers and button up shirts, but by night, short, sleeveless, provocative fringed dresses were their weapons of choice. Before long, the fads caught on in Hollywood and young girls…

He interprets one customer as being old, dull and unable to relate to young people only because the customer was elderly, is an example of being cynical. Sammy’s intensive opinions and interpretations proved his lack of knowledge outside the small town. For example, he is disrespectful in his thoughts towards the “A & P” customers, seeing them as “sheep” and “houseslaves.” This is the part that it becomes obvious that he does not care about the customers and is unhappy at his job.…

Setting plays a important part in A&P by John Updike. It takes around Boston in the 1950s. If 3 women walked into a supermarket wearing beach attire in that highly conservative time, they would be definitely be criticized for it and asked to cover up or leave. If 3 girls walked into Acme today wearing that, I would bet that they would probably attract many strange looks, but they would probably get away with their attire. They might get a warning or they might not. They MIGHT get a warning, even in our pretty liberal society we live in 2016. Imagine being around Boston in the 50s. In such a conservative area and time period, it's hard to imagine a scenario where the 3 girls are not asked to leave the store…

The grocery store in “A&P” is similar to Redner’s Markets or Giant today; everyone goes there. In today’s society, one would see suburban moms and people getting off work in the grocery stores. This is also shown in the story from the other customers at “A&P.” The time period was a conservative one in which women always covered up before going…

Sammy acted on impulse when he felt that Lengel embarrassed the girls. Sammy’s adolescent thinking was demonstrated in the story when he said “The girls, and who’d blame them, are in a hurry to get out, so I say “I quit” to Lengel quick enough from them to hear, hoping they’ll stop and watch me, their unsuspected hero” (Updike 20). Being an adolescent Sammy believed that this would make him stand out to the girls and be liked by them for quitting his job on their behalf. The only person Sammy made a impression on was Lengel. It wasn’t heroics Lengel seen in Sammy. It was immaturity.…

In John Updike’s short story “A&P,” the narrator is an impulsive nineteen-year-old boy named Sammy who is a grocery checker in a conservative town. While observing his customers, he finds himself fascinated by a trio of girls in bikinis. This is interesting because to Sammy these girls are appealing, but in reality they are going to cause more harm for him than good. Throughout the story Updike uses symbolism to show how the trios of girls are going against everyday social rules and characterization to show the power of desire.…

From the beginning of the story down to the very end rebellious human behavior is all you really see from the younger people loud and clear. It all starts with three girls in two piece bathing suits and no shoes slowly making their way through the A&P grocery store. Of course Sammy immediately notices them and being nineteen how could these three girls in revealing bathing suits not catch his attention. He sees them as something new to the regular routine he is use too, something refreshing. He critiques there bodies and looks and then compares them to the other customers in the store which he calls "sheep" and "house-slaves". So use to there old routine that they all seem to flow in the same direction down the isles one by one even though he says it's "not like we have one-way signs or anything" they just seem to be afraid to change the way things usually are. Unlike these three girls who chose to not only walk in the opposite direction of everyone else but to move slowly scanning each shelf, obviously enjoying the attention, and avoiding eye contact.…

The leading action of “A & P” resides not only in the grocery store, but primaritly in Sammy’s mind. The narrator touches on the stages of his work day while he focuses his thoughts on his denial of conventional conformity. In the early pages of “A & P,” Sammy establishes his contempt for conformity and consumerism, insinuating that the people who shop at A & P are “sheep” (Updike441) who can never be roused out of their daily routines. The word “sheep” gives readers strong imagery to picture the environment of the grocery store. The customers are compared to animals that are followers of previous actions.…

Stranger Than Fiction, directed by Mark Forster, is an unusual movie. I personally liked the movie very much, but it was definitely out of the mainstream of movies today. The main character, Harold Krick (played by Will Ferrell) is a seemingly normal IRS agent that lives life on a very punctual and precise schedule. He is always on time for things and even counting the number of times he brushes his teeth in the morning! The character that Ferrell acts is not the typical character that Ferrell works on, but it is a very good change for him because it somewhat makes the audience think that there will be something comedic in the movie. As a whole, the cast was a very good choice and fit the characters well. The movie is very delightful because it shows various different themes in it. For example, the movie contains a sprinkle of bildungsroman qualities through the character development in Harold Krick.…
