WWT considered two other alternatives to develop the software for ICC: double the current capacity of its software division to develop the software in-house or contract out the development of the software. The decision to enter a software joint venture with SSS created much potential for gain and risk. The strengths highlighted include lower labor cost, recent relaxation of government regulation and SSS’s experience writing telecommunications software. Labor costs are significantly lower in India than in the United States and the quality of the work is comparable. Lower labor costs can help increase WWT’s profit margin. The Indian government remains interested in software, which has made it easier for foreign firms to get government approval required to invest in a joint venture and to obtain favorable import tariffs for equipment. WWT speculates it will be able to import software equipment at a 15% tariff, which is 45% lower than other industries. In addition to these benefits, there are some external opportunities that exist from engaging in a joint venture located in India. India is a huge potential market for WWT and therefore it is important for them to learn about the Indian business environment. WWT can take advantage of the opportunity of having the JV located in India by learning…

Infosys Consulting has 700 consultants by 2011 and they provide consulting services worldwide with a focus on entrepreneur technologies. Infosys has two valuable business models: Value Realization Method (VRM) and Global Delivery Model (GDM). These two models have been IC’s key differentiators during the recent few years. Each consulting project is staffed with 1 IC-based consultant, 1 ITL-based technical employee and 3 IT employees. This helps to bring together both strategies and technologies. However, managing director Raj discovered that GDM could be further developed to a better model. Then comes to the valuable VRM.…

    3. Given the low per capita income of the country, why would you still argue for India to be an excellent place to do business in the coming years? The Indian government’s new approach is helping a great deal. In addition, there are other attractions that entice MNCs to India. These include (1) a large number of highly educated people, especially in critically short supply areas such as medicine, engineering, and computer science; (2) widespread use of English, long accepted as the international…

The author describes the example of how India became a major outsourcing destination for a range of high-skill jobs and tasks for American companies. Thanks to the high number of english speakers, world class educated computer science engineers and the bursts of fibre optic cable during the Y2K crisis, India was positioned to offer decisive services of a highly trained pool of labor to the American market at very inexpensive rates (compared to what it would cost to do the same job in the U.S.)…

The American market is the hunting-ground for the Indian software companies. Most of its jobs are from the market of U.S. The subprime crisis and the subsequent freezing of purchase decisions in the U.S have brought home to the Indian information technology service (ITS) companies the recklessness of depending almost entirely on that one market. India’s top five ITS companies – TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Satyam and HCL Tech – collectively lost over Rs 2,50,000 crore in market value in 2007-2008. Operating profits were also down, with margins for the companies decreasing by 6 to 15 percent this year.…

In 1991 the Indian government introduced a series of drastic reforms, liberalizing its government owned and controlled economy. Product expansion and new market entry became easier for companies in virtually every sector of the economy. This presented Tata with many opportunities to leverage its strong brand equity and financial resources to enter new markets and industries. The strong brand image gave it a tremendous advantage over competitors in a variety of industries. However, the government reforms also lowered barriers to entry and increased competition in all of Tata’s industries. Foreign companies flooded into India, threatening to take market share from Tata companies. The world was globalizing and India was liberalizing its economy. Tata was forced to consider its strengths and weakness, analyze its many businesses and their industries, and evaluate the threats and opportunities presented by this changing global economy.…

Being a company grounded on a Indian soil at that tome was not an advantage for Infosys because the economic policy supported by the government prior to 1991 caused many problems for business, especially for those businesses that wanted to import goods from a foreign market. Therefore the easiest business solution for Infosys was to develop software services , since production of hardware could have been a troble because all the devices they need for the hardware development were imported from abroad. Because the domestic market held no real opportunity for the new company, Infosys focused on international markets for its software products.…
