Let’s face it a tiger in a zoo cage isn’t very appealing to the naked eye; the animals seemed distressed and lazy, but is a zoo the main cause of this generality? Although many Americans believe that animals shouldn’t be kept in zoo captivity, but rather be allowed to roam their natural habitat, Americans should consider the zoo a beneficial home because the animals receive a better diet, foreign exploration leads to a comfortable zoo home, and breeding stability in a zoo provides an enhanced genetic code of animals that can aid in medical discoveries for animals and people. A zoo has an odd way of showing freedom toward their animals while they are held in zoo captivity considering that the zoo gives a limited space and takes away their natural habitat. The zoo wants to keep the animals the same of course this sounds a lot easier said than done. Zoo director Jim Hubing states that “breeding programs are more complicated than they may seem because of the demands of genetics: an important requirement in the initiative is to not let the genetic makeup stray too far from the genes of the counterparts in the wild” (qtd. in Jones para.8). This is important because this proves that animal’s genes are adaptable meaning animals can change anywhere they live. The animal’s genes evolve based on the adaptations of where they live, and the zoo tries to fulfil this need. The animals evolving DNA is based upon the wild in effect the zoo tries hard to sustain the environment. Hubing also states, “Who is to say that the wild genes of animals’ can be the cure to a nasty disease or any other great discovery?” (qtd. in Jones para.9).
