They growl, moan, shuffle and bite. But they are also intelligent and able to love. They are zombies. Horror movies have always been one of the most popular midnight movies. Among one of the subgenre of horror movies are those about zombies. In the last few years their popularity has massively grown. The notion of the living dead fascinated humans for centuries and continues to do so even today. Over the history zombie movies have been able to revolutionize the portrayal of zombies. Thus, their representation expands from flesh-eaters to beings that are able to function normally, and even to fall in love. The basic purpose is to survive and try to stay human in a world with no boundaries and morality. Chapter “Leadership” introduces three different and important types of leaderships as shown in the series: the leadership of Rick, the Governor and Deanna. “The female gaze” is a chapter where the short overview of the female characters will be presents. The main focus will be on two different characters of the series; Michonne represented as a strong character and Carol’s character development. The chapter “We are the Walking Dead” gives insight into three different zombie movies: “Night of the Living Dead”, “Return of the Living Dead”, “28 Days Later” and a television series “iZombie”. In this chapter, a short introduction into the movies and the series will be given, followed by the characterization of zombies. Differences and similarities with the series “The Walking Dead” will be considered and discussed. Furthermore, the position of zombies and humans in the series will be shown. Finally, the chapter “The dead continue to rise” will be about the show’s growing popularity and the overall popularity of zombies and horror creatures as a movie
