Zexius Observation
Zexius and I had been best friends since the day we began kindergarten at St. Bertha Holofernes Elementary School. As the years went on we began a routine, after school we spent our time listening to music in the parking lot of the local library, eating a great amount of sugary sweets. Generally speaking, our topics for conversation ranged from girls, sports, school, weather, and classic rock music. Zexius and I put in a countless number of hours working for the local pizza shop, washing numerous plates and utensils to be able to afford the latest Beats portable speaker. After this we used all our free time listening to various Spotify hip-hop playlists, blasting the music that our parents view as heinous. This routine only became better as the summer season came upon us as we were able to stay out from sunrise to sunset, making our way across the town, listening to the music produced by our Beats portable speaker. Never have Zexius and I broke this routine since those early St. Bertha Holofernes Elementary School, that was until the summer of 2016 when the world …show more content…
They said that they had to speak with me concerning the “Zoo gate” matter, the tone in their voice was serious. My father explained to me that he and my mother thought Harambe ought to be left alone. My neighborhood was split in two in terms of support for Harambe, my area was pro Harambe, but the East side was anti Harambe. At first I thought that this wasn’t going to affect my life in any crazy way, then I remembered that Zexius’s house is in the Eastern section of my area. Matters surrounding this issue were taken so seriously that America wasn’t only split in terms of belief, but split geographically speaking too. Because of this gorilla I wasn’t able to see my closest friend, the first person I go to with my troubles, the person I can tell anything too, the person I think of as my

Within this week’s reading, finishing up with the music stardom unit, we read about the band “New Kids on the Block,” through David Marshalls input on the meaning of the Popular Music Celebrity. He explains how song writers developed the singers through sheet music and lyrics, connecting the performer to the audience. To continue, he explains how the growth of technology thus allowed the mass productions of songs, with portable music devices and radios, everyone was able to listen to their favorite music in their favorite environments. Marshall says, “Moreover, the activity of listening permitted the investment of personal experiences into the meaning of the music to a great degree than did concert performances” (198). Essentially, the portable…

They are held in a crowded, miserable outdoor prison, where they are subjected to brutality by the guards. To make matters worse, Muslims Zeitoun and Nasser cannot eat most of the food they are given, as it includes pork.Eventually, the men are transferred to Hunt Correctional Facility - still without being properly charged. Although the conditions here are marginally better, Zeitoun is still not allowed to call Kathy, and he begins to despair that he will ever be released. Zeitoun suffers undiagnosed pain and loses weight rapidly. He believes that hubris and pride are responsible; by not heeding Kathy 's warnings, he has placed himself in this predicament. He appeals to a sympathetic missionary to call Kathy on his behalf, and he reluctantly agrees although it is against the rules. The next day, Zeitoun is interviewed by the Department of Homeland Security. Their agents are relatively friendly and also agree to call Kathy. After learning Zeitoun’s location, Kathy is able to post bail using their office building as collateral. Soon after, the charges against him are dropped. After his release, the family sets about gutting and rebuilding their home in New Orleans. They continue to have problems with the bureaucracy of FEMA and the legal system. FEMA offers them a free trailer to live in but does not give them a key, and then refuses to take it away from the Zeitouns’ property when it is no longer necessary. They file a lawsuit demanding compensation for Zeitoun’s incarceration, but it had not progressed much by 2008, when Zeitoun was written. Both Zeitoun and Kathy continue to suffer symptoms of post-traumatic stress, but they persevere and refuse to leave New Orleans. Zeitoun takes great satisfaction from rebuilding both the city (through his contracting business) and his life (through his family).…

Since the beginning of history, men and women both had predetermined gender roles. They acted in certain ways that they thought were right. They also behaved in certain ways because of their race. Back then, you wouldn’t dare catch a Black man dating a White woman. Today, interracial dating doesn’t bother most people. In the old days, men were the breadwinners for their families, while the women sat back and stayed home with the children. Now, more women are out in the workforce and sometimes, the roles are switched, having the husband being the homebody. This paper examines the differences between the different ways young women view themselves and their race through music versus the way males are stereotypically viewed by others because of their race.…

The narrator of this book has his own view about zoos. He tries to make it seem as if his view is absolutely true and is scientifically proven and that he is 100% politically correct. According to him a zoo to an animal is like a home to a human. But I totally disagree with his view on the zoos.…

They were the Jones family. The Jones family had a husband, wife, a grandmother, and a small 4 year old boy. I didn’t really speak to the grandmother that much. It was just an ordinary hello. I mostly spoke to the couple about everything. They both were college graduates and employed. First, the wife was laid off about a year and a half ago and then the husband about 9 months ago. It was so hard for both of them to find a job. All this time they had been surviving off of their savings but eventually came a point when those were gone too. Now they purity much just live at the center and their car and the center is the one that provides them with food. The couple are just tensed and yet still are trying to find a job. Grandma is just old and quiet keeping all her emotions inside of her. The cute little boy is clueless of what has happened to them. He is just happy in his own little world and plays with other children that came to the center once in a while. I remember not clearly, but while I was observing he was talking about going back home, was kind of depressing. I also, interviewed another couple somewhere in their middle adulthood with no children. They both were working in the same firm due to the economy their firm was laying people off randomly and both of them ended up losing their job. I didn’t go up to the woman as she was on the phone. I decided to talk to an old white man somewhere in his late fifties early sixties. He was by himself. At first I didn’t want to speak to him because I was afraid that what if he yells at me, but then I decided to just go ahead and do it because it would be a different age group , gender, and an interview of a homeless just as an individual. I was being as polite as I can to him and put out my questions to him in the form of a conversation not as an interview so it doesn’t offend him. His name was Timothy Garter. Like everyone child he went to school and…

It was a warm sunny day, like the ones you would expect in a summer camp; laughter was the melody that filled the air. Everybody was cheerful and enthusiastic, well everybody except one of our counselors. He was very worried, because his sister had been extremely sick, and nobody had been able to heal her. Everybody in my group had told him how sorry we felt for her, but really nobody connected with his situation, so we were not thinking about it. Instead we were immerging our souls into the contentment that was surrounding us. That day while we were acting, everybody was relaxed, focused and happy on what we were doing. We were living in our own little summer bubble. We decided to take a small break, in between the laughs I remember a friend saying “Isn’t it surprisingly amazing how beautiful life can be?”. That was the last sentence said before a cell phone rang and changed the course of the day.…

    Young The Giant Analysis

One of the most difficult aspects of young upcoming bands trying to make a name for themselves is how they distinguish their image from other bands. Young the Giant, a band of multi-cultured background hailing from Irvine California, has built their success on their exemplification of pure indie rock music. The eclectic ensemble of musicians and upbeat energetic sound that Young the Giant delivers is simply catchy and enthralling. The band’s desire to make an impact on their audience through music is what truly makes them special and gives them a unique identity. In Young the Giants performance at The Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland, the band accentuated the difficulties one faces in growing as a human and negotiating the different boundaries of social values in life. The band’s lyrical manipulation combined with their blatant freedom and disregard of society’s social pressures were masterfully demonstrated in their performance. And, through this performance is how they collectively assert themselves as a true indie rock band. In their live performance, I witnessed how…

    Spirit Day Research Paper

A few years ago, I was just a freshman, who was intrigued by every aspect of my school. I was surprised to see that there is a hang out place called Senior hills, and that’s where most of the seniors hang out. There was also a specific room where most musically gifted kids hang out called the Band room. And lastly there is A quad, where kids love the color black, and could spend all day reading manga. As I wonder where I belong to in this huge melting pot, I met a group of older girls in my geometry class, Jordyn, Hannah, and Ally. Jordyn insisted that I should hang out with them, since I’m new and need guidance. They showed me to my classes, and taught me about spirit weeks and rally days. They said we should use spirit days to show school unity and look cuter than usual. One day, during lunch, when we were all dressed up as hippies in our trendy bohemian clothes chit chatting about what to wear for tomorrow spirit…

My mom was sitting to the left of me and my dad was sitting next to her. “Hey Ba, have you ever tried dog or do people over in Vietnam eat dog?” I was expecting a straight “no” but my dad just laughed it off and brushed off my question. I was confused. Why do people always ask me this question? Can you imagine eating your own pet? Actually, let’s not think about that. I slowly became curious on how my cousins looked. I actually never met any of my family members before and I am curious on how they will react on Americans visiting them. You might wonder why I had all these weird thoughts but I was just a 10-year old girl. A bunch of things ran through my mind but I’ll stop it at there. We finally landed at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport. I don’t recall much on how it looked but it definitely wasn’t as nice looking as LAX. I anxiously followed my parents and helped grabbed the luggage. I felt drips of sweat running down my face and I began to feel sticky. The weather over here is bizarre. It was humid, gloomy, and rain started pouring out of nowhere. It was not the type of rain where you would want to run in. Suddenly, I hear a bunch of yelling. “HEY! HERE! HERE!” I didn’t quite understand what was going on because there were multiple of voices. Soon, I see a middle-aged man with glasses, wearing a white wrinkly dress shirt, only half of his buttons was buttoned, and some khaki colored shorts. He greeted my parents and then greeted my siblings and I. Who is this odd man and why was he smiling at us like he knows us? Yup, it was one of my uncles. You know in romantic movies, in every airport scene, there’s always that one person or a group of people holding a cute sign with your name on it? I was expecting to have one of those because I didn’t know what to expect and this was my first time at an airport. Wouldn’t that be cool though? But, of course it didn’t happen and I was a little disappointed.…

Music has continuously been changing ever since the first beat was tapped, the first piano was struck, the first violin was plucked, and the first horn was blown; however, in the last 150 years, the meaning of lyrics and the style of music has changed drastically. From Bing Crosby to Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Eminem, the artists and composers have altered the way music sounds on the radio, computer, and other musical devices. Every genre has artists, who have songs, which have lyrics that contain a story. Whether the story is from a memory, a dream, or an ambition, it becomes clear when it is being heard by billions of people. Music has become a basis for artists to exert their most inner emotions and thoughts into lyrics that others can relate to, live by, and act upon, as well as a means to degrade women in an approach that people don’t realize until the lyrics are sought out, the song is heard an abundance of times, or the video is seen.…

My mother had found a zoo online that was located in our city and decided that it would be fun to check it out. I had my doubts since I had always trusted well-known zoos such as the San Diego Zoo, but in the end I too decided it would be worth looking into. It was Saturday noon, when my mom, dad, and I left for the zoo. When we were halfway there we came upon a bumpy road scattered with rocks. My father told us that it was used in winter to keep the cars from slipping on the icy road. But I could only think of one thing at that moment, the immense headache which the constant bumping on the road brought me. I complained that we should’ve gone to the Humane Society. It was right near the house and there wasn’t a bumpy road we had to cross when…

For this paper I decided to visit Zoo Atlanta to observe lowland gorillas. I got to the zoo at around eleven in the morning and found out the feeding times for the gorillas. Once I found them, after watching them for a little while I selected the most active group to go watch during feeding. The point of this trip was to make me feel as if I was doing a field laboratory observation of primate social behavior and it definitely did. As you read my paper I will include what I saw, my feelings towards it, and also any questions or facts I received during my visit from volunteers or signs throughout the exhibit. To put this paper into perspective with this anthropology class I will be using five terms that are from chapter seven to relate the field observation. I hope you enjoy my paper, cause I sure enjoyed writing it.…

Everyday started to turn into one giant ball of seventh-grade drama. Having only two friends does not seem like a lot of gossip and name-calling, but these friends were as cold as a pint of ice cream that has been sitting in the freezer for at least a year. The knot we had tied in our friendship had started to untie itself. Each day we drifted apart, but our pact did not become completely broken until the day we came back…

It was a dreary fall day, the leaves on the ground were soaking into the mildew-covered streets and the must in the air was a sure sign that winter was going to be warm. It had been like that all week, when boredom sinks in it causes the brain to shut down. Anna and I had been watching her favorites soaps; oh yeah let's talk boredom. That was back when she used to call me friend. She was completely immersed in the love affair or whatever this weeks flavor of the month was; I managed to do what I do best, slack off. You would think a five page paper, due tomorrow, would give reason to double time; but it was way more interesting to futz with her new computer. I blame the people who created Mario, damn them it's so addicting. Shortly after Anna discovered my lack of attention to the task at hand followed by a lecture, I started to plug away at the paper.…
