Many people think that Zeus was this big, scary Greek god, but he actually wasn't. In the Greeks eyes, they saw him as a regular human, just like the other gods. Zeus was very great, tricky, and captivating.

Zeus had many brothers and sisters. He was the son of Kronos. Zeus wanted to come father of all gods, but he had to become greater than his father. He needed to have more power than his father, but knew that he couldn't do it by himself. Zeus had a mother who wanted revenge. Her name was Rhea. They tied him to a bed and tried to kill him, but he got out because of one of the Hecatoncheires. When Apollo and Poseidon obeyed Zeus, they made the walls of Troy, and this helped in the Trojan War. After Zeus rallied his brothers and sisters, they were called the Olympians. They were in a ten-year war with the Titans also known as the Titanomachy. After the war, they couldn't live peacefully. Gaia, the earth goddess, asked the bad giants for help to destroy Zeus in the Gigantomachy.

One of the people that Zeus punished was Prometheus, a Titan. Prometheus was punished by having his insides eaten by an eagle each day. His crime was that he took fire from the gods and gave it to the humans. Zeus killed Asclepius by one of his thunderbolts. Asclepius had a power to raise the dead, jeopardizing the stability of god and men. Zeus made a lot of punishment, but he also had the right to say that he was a peacemaker. Apollo and Heracles got into a fight, and seus stopped them by the power of Delphi.

Zeus had three jars. They were the three jars of Fate. To the humans, he was very fair. Zeus distributed the jars with justice. Each time a human died, their hearts were weighed on Zeus’s golden scales

The gods seem to believe that mortals can for the most part control their own fate and that they are merely there to punish those that do wrong or to sometimes help those that may be meant for greater things and begin to stray from their intended path. They can control the fate of the mortals but do not always choose to. Only when such a mortal is important to the future of a certain situation will the gods interfere. They do however very much so act as sort of a justice system to punish but also reward. Poseidon severely punished Odysseus when he blinded the Cyclops by sending him to Calypso’s island for 10 years and not letting him return home. He then sank the Pheacians ship as it was returning to the harbor to punish them for helping get Odysseus home. Yet at the same time Athena helped Odysseus by going to Zeus and pleading with him to let Odysseus return home. If it wasn’t for Athena’s interference with Odysseus’ fate he would have never completed his journey home. What happened with Odysseus shows perfectly that the gods do not have a set code of morals. They do as they please and punish who they feel deserving, they even contradict each other’s punishments. If one god feels a mortal should be punished, but then another god thinks they shouldn’t the gods will work against each other so that each of them can have their way.…
