THE ASTOUNDING EFFECTS OF YOGA PRACTICE I have considered attending a yoga class many times in the past. When given the chance to research the affects of yoga, I decided to engage in the act or art to see the effects first hand. As a child I remember experimenting on the yoga mat with my father, a devoted yoga enthusiast. So this is something I have desired to do for many years. One Christmas or birthday, I cannot recall which my father’s present to me was “YOGA for Beginners” with Patricia Walden, GAIAM – Mind, Body, Health video and instruction booklet By Michael Gliksohn. The meditative practices through yoga help to achieve emotional balance through detachment. This means meditation creates conditions, where you are not affected by the happenings around you. This in turn creates a remarkable calmness and a positive outlook, which also has tremendous benefits on the physical health of the body (www.healthandyoga.com). Stress is the number one killer affecting all parts of our physical, endocrinal and emotional systems. (www.healthandyoga.com). One of the far-reaching benefits of yoga is the uncanny sense of awareness that develops in the practitioner of an impending health disorder or infection. This enables the person to take pre-emptive corrective action (www.healthandyoga.com). Some experts suggest that the regular practice of breathing though one nostril at a time (electroencephalogram or EEG) may help improve communication between the right and the left side of the brain. Studies have also shown that this brain activity is associated with better performance and doctors even suggest that yoga can enhance cognitive performance

    Bikram yoga was developed thirty years ago by Bikram Choudhury, a renowned Hatha Yoga Master. It is a specific yoga practice that is carried out in 105˚ F at 40% humidity for 90 minutes. Some studies and practitioners have suggested that Bikram yoga practice has positive impacts on physical health as well as decreasing stress and anxiety. There were certain inclusion criteria for participation in this study. Age was not an exclusion and participants ranged in age from 18 to over 60 years of age. This study sought to interview active students of Bikram yoga who have been practicing consistently for at least the last eight weeks, at a minimum of three times per week. Students meeting the requirements at the Bikram yoga studios in San Antonio were invited to complete the survey instrument from November 16 through November 26, 2011. Seventy-five students responded to the survey. The results indicated that there are significant positive results from regularly practicing Bikram yoga. Since Bikram yoga encourages students to hold poses in a “hot” room it increases heart rate and acts as a cardiovascular exercise without the high impact normally associated with cardio exercises. The results of the survey instrument yielded over 50% of respondents reporting an answer of “somewhat better” for all of the questions, indicating that most respondents see a benefit in their practice. Additionally, stress and anxiety decreased with over 80% of respondents reporting somewhat to much less anxious and stressed.     As I said before, I expected to just learn the basic poses. However, I didn’t expect to learn the actual names of the poses or what the purpose of each pose was; I never realized there was a reason to each pose or any actual benefit.
