Youth Unemployment: Generation Jobless

The article “Youth Unemployment, Generation Jobless” from The Economist focused on the young generation right now that is out of work. According to this article “The Economist calculates that, all told, almost 290m are neither working nor studying: almost a quarter of the planet’s youth”. So what is the cause of this unemployment in the younger generations? As I was reading this article I noted a couple things that contributed to the unemployment of the youth. The factors that I saw causing high unemployment in the young generation of the work force age 15-24 are job experience, lack of education, economic recessions, the growing population of the youth, gender roles, and lack of motivation. One of the biggest problems is lack of education. As mentioned in the article many youth drops out of school before they even get their high school diploma. Because of this “the jobless rate for people with less than a secondary-school education is twice as high as for those with university degrees”. Lack of job experience also leads to finding jobs for youth to be harder. Because some jobs don’t give the experience needed for other jobs, it is harder for the youth to find a job. This could also be seen as mismatch in job experience. Other problems that tend to lead to the high unemployment rate of youth are the slow growth of the economy and the fast growth of the younger population. When the economy does badly, it gives the youth a harder time to find a job. And because there is no motivation and everything seems hopeless, some youth give up and don’t find a job. This is a really big problem and I believe the best way to solve it is to fund the youth with better education. Instead of spending the tax money people who don’t have jobs, I think that money should be spent on encouraging the younger generation to a higher education.
