John Maguire’s goal of this article is to change the audience’s mind and have them take action. Throughout the article, he repeats that professors assume college students know how to properly write a paper, while in fact, they don’t know how to write a proper sentence. As he sat stiff backed and upright in the hard wooden chair, Jotham looked around anxiously. He could only see three of the walls, and the ceiling, if he craned his neck upwards, but that was enough to make him very uneasy indeed. They were grey and bare - not silver grey, but a horrible murky grey, that made it seem like everything was closing in on him. The room was rectangular; not at all wide; there was perhaps a metre between him and the nearer two walls, but it was extremely lengthy; probably about fifteen metres long.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

Georgia State University was my destination the fall of 2005. I was a starting freshman for the class of 2009. Everything seemed to be going perfect because I had graduated high school with a high grade point average. I thought I was the ready for every class especially English 1101 because I felt that my former high school teachers had taught me everything I need for college, little did I know that I had no clue how to write like a good writer. I lacked the grammar skills I need in order to present the message I need to convey to my audience in my essays, I did not know how to have sentence variety, and last but not least I thought it was not an important thing to back up my statements with real examples. My first writing assignment grade proves that I had a lot to learn my freshman semester at Georgia State University.…
