Younow Moderator
As a YouNow Moderator, what would you do if you came across a user who was insulting a broadcaster? *
As per the Community Rules & Guidelines, YouNow does not tolerate taunting, bullying, hate speech, racism, or otherwise harassing any other member of the community. As a YouNow Moderator I would have to determine first if it was, in fact, an insult. As it occurs in almost every part of the world, some insults are used in a positive context; and in Latin America, that happens more than we would want to.
If we assume the insult was intentional, I would warn the user. If the user persisted, I would have to suspend the user. If the user continued to break the rules after the suspension, I'd have to use my good judgement to determine if another

This experience makes it easier to judge the little (and sometimes big) cultural differences between latin american users, and to understand their needs and worries.

What experience do you have, if any, that is relevant to moderation and/or the tech & Internet industry? *
In the past, I volunteered for 11 months as a Forum Moderator in a gaming forum for an online MMORPG (Ragnarok Online), and later as a Game Master in-game. The forum had about 3000 active users. I learned to be patient and level headed, moderating the young gamer community.
After nine years working on IT, I consider myself tech-savvy and a technology lover. I expect technology to help people express themselves and bring them closer; and as I delved into my passion for psychology and counseling, I've gained skills for understanding social connections, and making better relationships. Also, as a bachelor in Law and IT Security enthusiast, I understand and value peace preserving policies and rules, and also the internet trolls's desire to break them.

Which social networks do you use? What is your favorite, and why? *
I use Facebook and LinkedIn mostly. My favorite is Facebook, for its multiple ways to connect with

Diane Cole believes when dealing with racial slurs or offensive ethnic jokes , it is best to speak up. Miss Cole shows us this in her essay called "Don't Just Stand There". Miss Cole believes it is best to do it in a private and calm atmosphere. Even though lashing out and responding with anger is most people's initial reaction. Lashing out is normally ineffective and does not solve the problem according to Miss Cole. Another thing Miss Cole believes is effective is making sure you heard what the person said correctly and correctly understood their intent behind those words. Imagine a young boy with autism who struggles to interact socially. Other children consider him unintelligent, and they have no trouble making him aware of their opinions. They call him names like retarded, dumb, and ignorant, but he cannot change the condition he has, so he withstands the insults. Even though the other children never strike him with their fists, the harsh words they use are just as intense. Politically incorrect terms, like “retarded,” that are used to hurt others are degrading, impudent, and should not be used.…

    1. No, I don’t think Mr. Mackenzie’s actions constituted of harassment. I don’t think this because I think he was innocently telling his coworker something that he saw on TV that he found to be humorous. I really think Ms. Best took the situation way too far. I feel that if the language really did bother her so much, she could have simply told him that although the skit in the show may have been funny, she doesn’t think that the conversation is office appropriate because of the language that the skit entails.…

I contend that to do nothing would be a major mistake. From a Kantian perspective, it is your duty to take action to protect yourself and others from future advances. Staying silent is equivalent to allowing the situation to persist. Rule Utilitarianism also dictates immediate action by all victims of such harassment, as action by all reduces the potential cost incurred by individuals. Practically speaking, doing nothing also opens the door for Brian to take preemptive action by distorting the facts to protect…

Sometimes there are children who will tease others for being different. They may be too young to understand how much of an impact their words or actions will make on another, but no child says or does anything considered mean without knowing that it will cause a negative reaction from another who wears glasses or is fatter, taller or smaller than them. It isn't just teasing, it needs addressing, it needs changing. It is not just “merely teasing” and immediate intervention is necessary. The child must be made to be aware that their words and actions are unkind and unfair. When disciplining the child it might be a good idea to make it personal and say, “how would you feel if child X called you that? What do you think you might be feeling right now?” This causes the child to pause and think about the consequences of their words and actions. If necessary, correct the child. If a child refers to an Indian child for example, as a “Paki” because it is seen as an acceptable word in their household, you could say “actually, child X is an Indian, and please do not use the word “Paki” it is not a nice word to use, do you understand?”…
