Yi Li Park Lab
Yi Li Park Lab: a comparison of Biotic and Abiotic factors of two different fresh water ecosystems in Yi li park Shanghai

Research Question

How are these two different man made ecosystems similar? Are the Biotic and abiotic factors in this manmade pond similar?

Aim

The purpose of the investigation is to observe the biological factors at the two man-made pond ecosystems at Yili Park, s well as observe the similarities and subsequent differences between the two. This will be done using my powers of observation and testing numerous factors, Later the water will be observed under a microscope slide.

Hypothesis

The larger pond will hold a wider array of biotic factors but similar abiotic factors.

Variables

Independent: Choice of pond
Dependent: Biotic and abiotic factors at the pond sites.
Controlled: Air, Time of day, Amount of light, methods

Materials

2 1L Bottles of pond water
1-liter containers to collect samples
1 Ph sensor
1 Dissolved oxygen sensor
1 Laptop with proper software installed
1 Thermometer
1 I-pod with camera
1 Net
1 Data collection table and clipboard
3 pairs of plastic gloves
1 microscope
1 dropper
5 concave slides with cover strips
2 pipets

Methods

1. Find two locations to collect sample water from
2. Collect 500 ml of water from the fist site and put it in the bottle
3. Measure water temperature using thermometer, do this three times and record
4. Using the computer and the subsequent sensor record the Ph of the pond, do this three times and record on data sheet.
5. Collect organism samples with the net and take their picture in the plastic container release sample
6. Repeat organism sample collection as seen necessary (collect a variety of samples)
7. Use the pipette to collect a small amount of water from the

To do this, we pulled rocks out of the creek and put them on land. There are three stages of groups, the first group means that the creek is not polluted. The second group means there is some pollution. The third group means that the creek is extremely polluted. For group 1 our group found 59 organisms. For group two, in our study, we found 15 and they were all scoud. In the group 3 we found 27 creatures. This is what we did in station 3 for the creek study field trip.…

While sites 3 and 4 both sites furthest from the dam showed higher levels of phosphates, turbidity and nitrates, corresponding with less total species showing a high chance of Eutrophication occuring. The sites closest to the dam ie the lake shore and the damn wall showed the lowest readings of nitrate and were within the guidelines of the ANZECC (1992).…
