Year Round School
Year Round School
I. Introduction
a. Attention Getter - Reviewing for weeks when a new year of school starts. You forget what you’ve learned the past year.
b. Link- With year round school, you wouldn’t have that problem.
c. Thesis Statement -
II. Narration –
a. Year round school, some of you may not know what it is or what its purpose is. Year round school was established in the 1800’s. The purpose of year round school is to have evenly distributed school days throughout the year for students not to forget what they’ve learned.
III. Confirmations
a. Argument One – First of all, I for one, is favoring in year round school. According to Ebsco host, “Year-Round schooling”, academic wise, year round school students have prone to do better than Traditional Calendar students. Some studies have found that during summer, learning loss is a real problem. With Year round school students wouldn’t have that problem. With a shorter summer break, students wouldn’t have to spend that much time in beginning of a new school year reviewing. Year round school calendars are much more different, you have a 45/15 model or others have a 60/20 model. Where students and teachers go to school for 45 days or 60 days then get 15 days off or 20 days off, depending on the model the school chooses.

b. Argument Two - Secondly, with the many breaks that come during the school year, families will have more opportunities to go on more vacations instead of having one per year. According to Certificationmap.com, “Year-Round School Pros and Cons” many families do appreciate having more vacations throughout the year.

c. Argument Three –According to Nea.org “Research Spotlight on Year-Round Education, remediation can occur when it is most needed, for instance during the school year instead of the summer. Students who do good in school, and get the help that they need, won’t need to work to pay for college. They can work hard for scholarships instead of going to work and save money for college.

Students are best served in a traditional school system. Just imagine what it would be like to have to go to school in the middle of what would be a traditional year round summer vacation. That is a reality for thousands of kids across the United States. This is why I believe that the traditional school system is more beneficial than a year round system. Year round schools have disruptive schedules, the day amounts end up being the same in year round and traditional school and, year round schools cost more to maintain and run year round.…

Year-round schools are good, and I do prefer them. There are reasons for this. One reason is because they have a better schedule than what we have now. Most year-round schools go for the 45-15 plan. This is when they go to school for 45 days,…

The traditional schedule for school is outdated because in the old days, it allowed for children to help harvest crops during the summer. Now, the long summer just enables kids to be lazy and easily forget what they learned at the end of the previous school year. If a year round school year were to be implemented, kids would not be able to be as lazy and breaks would not be so long as to let kids forget a whole bunch of their school curriculum.…

Schools should be year-round because of many factors like the fact that year-round schooling can generate strong feelings. A 1994 report, “Prisoners of Time,” argued that “a departure from the traditional school calendar could better meet the needs of contemporary society and result in increased student achievement.” Research has also shown that year-round schooling does have an effective on students. Reviews of existing literature on this subject generally contend that the achievement of children in year-round schools is as good as, or slightly better than, that of their peers in traditional schools (Palmer & Bemis, 1999; Kneese, 1996). Another example would be a study on six elementary schools where year-round schools posted overall-test-score increases that was higher than those of traditional schools (Kneese, 2000). Schools should also be year-round because the common belief is that after a long three-month summer break, students are forgetting what they learned the previous year and teachers are wasting valuable time trying to review everything from the previous year. A review of 39 studies that has been conducted showed that students test scores drop over summer vacation and that mathematics…

were satisfied with their child’s school experiences (Shields 9). For over 100 years, most schools have adhered to a traditional summer vacation schedule which stemmed from our primitive technological resources and advancements. However, as technological growth was made schooling throughout the year became more practical and thus the concept of a year-round schedule was introduced. With year-round schedules now becoming ever more prevalent and traditional schedules becoming slowly obsolete, a debate has sparked between the merits of the two. This debate has involved comparing the different advantages and disadvantages of the two schedules. While a traditional summer vacation may…

The traditional 3 month long summer break is a problem for today's youth. Year-Round school is a system where students will go to school 180 days just like the traditional school system but instead it is throughout the year and not just September-June. () The traditional school system was created in the nineteenth century. The country was mainly agricultural at this time. Farms were ran by families and children needed…

One of the major benefits of year-round school is that it aids students in a way that they can increase their overall grade. Students are less likely to forget what they have previously learned in school due to the lack of large breaks in the school year. Most importantly, there is more time. More time for school means more time can be devoted to each unit or section of material a teacher is covering. Less pressure to learn information in two weeks or even a month can help students apply their new knowledge to the long-term memory and gives more time for student to comprehend ideas in a more complex manor.…

Most importantly, year-round school would cause students to be exhausted. Even with the several shorter breaks, students would probably feel that they would be constantly working and stressed. Continuing to give students a longer break would allow them to rest and come back to school strong and ready for the upcoming year. A two or three month break is important to kids because they can be rewarded for a demanding school year. Summer allows children to balance work and play, which is important. Admittedly, some may argue that summer vacation causes children to forget everything, and this causes them to have to relearn and review forgotten concepts at the start of each new year. However, in my personal experience I have noticed that myself and others forget concepts just a few weeks into break, as opposed to a couple months into break. I have also noticed that after shorter vacations such as winter/spring break, kids come back needing a refresher of what they learned. Having to review concepts once a year is exhausting enough for both teachers and students. Imagine if this had to be done several times a year! It would defeat the purposes of having year-round school…
