The 9th element is sustenance, which is symbolized by a person picking fruit. One needs food and drink to survive or food for thought to develop mentally. This sustenance stage is closely linked to craving. One needs to have a thirst, a desire or craving for the things that they will consume as their sustenance to provide fuel. The 8th element is craving, which is symbolized by eating and drinking. Craving is dependent on feeling. Feelings and reactions to different foods or experiences shape ones craving for which ones they would like to experience again. The story of Pi and the tiger, Richard Parker in the book, Life of Pi is relevant to this element. When Pi tells officials about his experiences with the animals on the life boat, they do not believe him. When he tells the same story except this time with humans instead of animals on the life boat, they do believe him. He learns that people choose what to believe based on their conceptions and expectations of the given object or creature from past experiences.
