Brand managers Marcilie Smith Boyle (HBS MBA Class of 1996) and Allison Warren were getting together for their weekly Kingsford Charcoal ("Kingsford") debriefing meeting in February 2001 at Clorox's corporate offices in Oakland, CA. As the job-sharing brand managers for the $350 million charcoal business, Smith Boyle and Warren had a lot to discuss during their Wednesday "overlap" day. Both women were assigned to the brand in July 2000, just as it became apparent that the summer results were going to come in below forecast. Since the 1980s, Kingsford had continued to enjoy steady, moderate growth of 1-3 percent in revenues each year. During this time, the charcoal category as a whole had been growing as well. However the summer of 2000 represented the first softening in the overall charcoal category in several years, and Smith Boyle and Warren were tasked with determining the causes and coming up with recommendations.…

On March 25, 1911, 141 people were tragically killed in a completely preventable fire that consumed three floors of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. Those killed were mainly young female immigrants, many of whom couldn’t speak English. Nothing as gruesome had been seen in New York since the 1890’s. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire was a man-made disaster, that brought to light the horrible working conditions of the industrial era.…

I am writing you today to ask for your support. This year, on Saturday, August 5, I will be riding in my first Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC), from Wellesley to Bourne. The PMC raises money for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. My employer, Waters Technologies Corporation, is sponsoring a team for the first time, so I decided to join “Team Waters.” I will be riding in honor of my Mom, a breast cancer survivor and in memory of my sister, Jayne, who on May 17, 2017 lost her battle to liver and colon cancer.…
Title VII protects employees from being discriminated against based on sex, race, color, national origin and religion. In this case, Fragrante was denied a job position. He was not denied that position based on his religion, sex, race, color or national origin. He was not given the position because of his strong accent when speaking. Being able to speak and be understood by the public was a part of that position. The strong accent prevents that. I believe the Bona Fide Occupational Qualification applies more to this case than title VII. Bona Fide Occupational Qualification allows certain employment discrimination. This discrimination must be business necessary and job related. Honolulu’s division of motor vehicles and licensing had every right…

The Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is the nation’s largest non - profit organization that raises money for breast cancer research, educations, treatment, screening, and community outreach programs. The foundation holds 3 day walks for a cure around the country. The participant must raise $2,300, and pay a fee to participate in the 60 mile walk for a cure. Most of the runners have a special reason for participating in the race; some do it because they have cancer, they lost loved ones to the disease, and because they themselves were cured. The Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation report only the net proceeds they receive from breast cancer walking events, this way it improves the apparent fundraising efficiency. They made close to 2 billion dollars a year from the walks the foundation uses seventy- five percent to help support national research, and the remaining twenty-five percent supports local communities. They are already planning next year’s 3 day walk for a cure fundraiser.…
Each year an organization called American Cancer Society travels around the world hosting an event called Relay for Life raising money to help cancer research. Communities around the world join together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones who have lost the fight to cancer and to fight back against the disease that has taken the lives of so many. Relay for life began thirty years ago by a man named Dr. Gordy Klatt a surgeon from Tacoma, Washington. Klatt was a man with a utopian vision, he wanted to raise money for his local American Cancer Society office. He did so by doing something he loved, running marathons. In May 1985, Klatt spent 24 hours running laps around a track for 83 miles at Baker Stadium at the University of Puget…
The current dilemma with World Kitchen is to continuing making Pyrex themselves, or to contract the manufacturing out and buying it that way. This problems has arisen because of the aging Pyrex plant in Charleroi needs an upgrading and they have decided to look at it to see if it is better to outsource it or to upgrade the plant and continue to make it. Pyrex was first started in the early 1900’s by Corning Glass Works. It was made by mistake when Bessie Littleton the wife of a Corning chemist ask her husband to bring home s some strong shatterproof glass for her to use in the kitchen. What her husband did was bring two jars home, made of low- expansion glass. Bessie had cooked a sponge cake in one of the glasses and she found out that the cooking time was shorter, it did not stick to the glass, the flavor washed off of it and did not stick to the glass, and she could see through it to see how the cake was baking. The Chemist then took the cake to his work the following day and had his coworkers look at what she had made with the glass he took home. They then began a two year process to perfect the glass and to start selling it. So in 1915 Pyrex started to hit department and China stores everywhere. World Kitchen was formed in 2000 and is the current owner of Pyrex. World Kitchen already outsources a bunch of their products and this is so they can stay competitive with the competition. That is because with a lot of their current products they are made cheaper overseas versus the cost it would be to make them in the states. By 2006 World Kitchen only owned two plants in United Stated the Pyrex one in Charleroi and a Corelle Plant. The two plants use different forms of technology, the Charleroi plant uses tempering the thick translucent glass while the Corelle plant uses a processes by pressing three layers of thin strengthened opaque glass together. In the Charleroi plant they have a furnace that has to run 24 hours a day and it is…
Have you ever wondered whether a candle burns more quickly on a hot day, than on a cold day? Or is it the other way around? This science fair project was carried out to compare how quickly a candle will burn at different room temperatures. The experiment was done by measuring how much of a candle will melt in 30 minutes when placed in an environment with surrounding temperatures of 20°C, 25°C and 30°C.…
