Xiang Yu And Gaozu: The Records Of The Grand Historian
What constitutes a great warrior, does not necessarily comprise a great leader. The Records of the Grand Historian show a great warrior in Xiang Yu, but also a terrible leader. Further, this text portrays Gaozu as an adequate warrior yet, a magnificent leader. A warrior is defined by their ability to bravely enter battle against all odds, while also having incredible combat skills that evoke fear in their enemy. When analyzing two characters, Xiang Yu and Gaozu, from Records of the Grand Historian, Xiang Yu is visibly a greater warrior because he encompasses the qualities of a true warrior. Xiang is described as “over eight feet tall and so strong… In ability and spirt he far surpassed others, so that all young men of the region of Wu were afraid of him” (18). Xiang Yu’s present alone literally struck fear into lesser men. While on the other hand Gaozu is seen as, “kind and affectionate with others, liked to help people, and was very …show more content…
David’s heavy reliance and use of others input leads him to become a great leader, not a great warrior. The same case can be made for Gaozu. Often in The David Story, David trusts the decisions that not only his head general Joab make, but also the decisions that God makes for him. While Gaozu does not have God making choices for him, he does always keep the heavens in mind and also had great generals to fall back on. Gaozu, similarly to David, receives a great deal of help, “When it comes to sitting within tents of command and devising strategies…I am no match for Zhang Liang…In ordering the state and caring for the people… I cannot compare to Xiao He…In leading an army of a million men… I cannot come up to Han Xin” (76). Gaozu utilized the advice of others and this led to him being a more thoughtful and competent leader. Gaozu, in the same manner as David recognizes his success was partly due to the help of the people around

China was unified in 221 B.C.E. for the first time in many centuries after decades of constant warfare (also called the “Warring States Period”) for the first time in centuries under the leadership of Qin (McKay, 178). The king of Qin did not feel that the title of king was grand enough and created the title “Emperor” (huangdi) and he called himself the First Emperor (Shihuangdi) in hopes of many successors (McKay, 178-179). The Qin state soon fell apart and led to the beginning of the Han Dynasty, which managed to take power and keep China unified until 220 C.E. The unification of China affected many parts of politics, culture, and social life during the Qin and Han Dynasties.…

He elaborates on the fact that the best leader is not even known to exist. “When (the master’s) work is done, the people will say, “Amazing : we did it, all by ourselves””, according to Lao. He is trying to restate and exaggerate the, quite possibly most important, point in his writing. He states that “the master doesn't talk, he acts”, showing that he is not only a leader for the positive relationship he has with the people, but also for doing the things that need to be done. Despite this fact, this “best type” of leader doesn't take the credit for what could be argued is his success. He does this because of the trusting bond and positive relationship he holds with his people, allowing them the success, but also maintaining his role in leadership by not even hinting at the true depth of his rule. And it is because of this that I agree with Lao-tzu; anyone this selfless and pure of intent deserves to rule over a trustworthy people, just as much as the people of any place deserve a leader of this…

In a lot of ways, Gilgamesh is portrayed as a hero in his epic story. Some consider him a “hero” due to his superior stature, confidence, and physical capabilities. Some do because of his courage and bravery. Although a hero contains many these characteristics, and fitting the role of a hero has many meanings, Gilgamesh simply does not share the character traits of a “true hero” and does not represent what it means to be one. Throughout the entire epic, Gilgamesh demonstrates outrageous skill as a warrior and leader. “Gilgamesh is strong to perfection.” “He is an awesome beast with unmatched strength and a chant that fosters armies.” He leads his tribe into battle fearlessly and defeats everyone they come into battle with, it is said that, “Gilgamesh’s tribe is invincible, and aroused by small insults.” This shows his remarkable leadership ability, in that his tribe is eager to fight knowing that their King will not let them down. He shows his great strength by fighting the mighty beast Humbaba. Even such an enemy was still no match for Gilgamesh’s extreme skill. He was able to slay the beast and return home safely. Again he shows his fighting skills when he makes Ishtar mad at him and she tells Anu to release the might bull to go and trample Gilgamesh. Again Gilgamesh was triumphant in battle and in an attempt to rid his city of the harmful bull he, “plunged his sword into the throat held fast by Enkidu.” Yet again, Gilgamesh shows his strength during his journey to Utnapishtim when he climbs the double cliff up Mt. Mashu. When he reaches the top, the poison scorpion guard said to him: “No mortal man has ever come to know what you seek here. Not one of your kind has come so far.” The scorpion guard was so amazed by his amazing…

Gilgameshs' strength and tremendous skill as a warrior is clearly demonstrated all the way through this epic story. He takes his people into battle and fearlessly dominates everyone that he and his men go up against. His men know without a doubt that he will not let them down and that they will be able to conquer anyone; this is a true testament to his great leadership abilities. Gilgamesh shows his tremendous strength by fighting the beasts Humbaba and killing him. This was by no means an easy tasks to accomplish, it says that (pg. 18), "Humbaba whose name means Hugeness, a ferocious giant…when he roars it is like the torrent of the storm, his breath is like fire, and his jaws are death itself." Gilgamesh's response to hearing about the mighty beasts was (pg. 18), "Only God lives forever…my days are numbered…I will go first although I am your lord, any you may safely call out, forward there is nothing to fear!" Sure enough Gilgamesh and his men are triumphant and return back to there town safely.…
