had to try and keep each other positive, otherwise nothing good would happen and they would end up all being killed. Another thing that really intrigues me is the trenches, and how they designed them, and all the reasoning for them building them a certain way.
I did not realize until after reading the novel the big part of WW1 was how they fought the war, and that was done through trenches. The zig zagging of the trenches was such a huge part in the building of them, so that the enemy could not just shoot straight down the trench and wipe everyone out at one time. It was very cool to me to see how they then moved to the next section of trenches if the other line had been taken over. The worst part about the trenches I feel, is having to be in them every day, and all day. Then to be living in them with all the rodents and in the wet sloppy ground all day long, that had to have been horrible for them men and on their bodies. I now realize why everyone wanted Kemmerick's boots because they were such nice leather and water proof. Also because the men were on the feet all day every day, I, sure good support on your feel make your whole body feel much better. "Miller would be delighted to have Kemmericks boots." Chapter 2 I think if I could get boots like thought when I know I have to be walking through what they did, I would be delighted to have them as well. There were many things that changed on my point of view on the war after reading the novel. I even have more respect for vets knowing what they go through fighting for my independents, and freedom here in the United
States. Another thing that was very important to the soldiers, was nature and earth. There were many times through the novel that the men made reference to the earth. It was a source of food for them, a home, and place for them to go to stay alive during different situations. "These are wonderful care-free hours. Over us the blue sky. On the horizon float the bright yellow sunlit observation-balloons, and the many little white clouds of the anti-aircraft shells." This was a quote said by one of the men, I think that this quote shows a lot on how they used nature in many ways. I feel like this quote shows us that the men used nature in a way of keeping their spirits up, and trying to stay positive when times were horrible. On the flip side of all of the nice things about nature, it was also their resource for staying alive. I feel like through the digging of trenches, and then their little rooms underground, that’s what kept most of them alive for a while during the war and battles. They always had a place to run to if something went wrong. Nature played a huge part in the WW1. There were many good things that nature provided for the soldiers. But later on towards the wend of the war nature started to become a problem. Solider were finding ways to hind bombs and such underground, witch them lead to men waking over them and then getting blown up. In the novel it shows how important the ground and Gods creation was to the soldiers while fighting. There were many symbols that the author used to show us different views of the war through the novel. One of the big symbols was the boots of Kemmerichs, which showed materialism. Which means that nothing else matters as long as you have the right clothes, equipment, etc. Example someone could have die or got shot, and the men wouldn’t have cared because they had their material and belongings yet and they were not hurt so who cares. The another shows us that in are day and age as long as we have all the things that we want, and we are in fashion, or the name brand stuff that’s all we care about. "only the facts are real and important for us. And good boots are scares." Chapter 2 Through this quote it shows us how in the novel the men were the Same way, and had the same mind sets they needed all the good material and equipment. Other symbol that the author used was rats. "They steal food and scamper over are faces while we are sleeping." What I feel the author was trying to get through is how gross the war was, and the environments the men were in 24-7. The rats also symbolized how the soldiers were eating old and gross infested food day after day as the rats were eating the rotten food. The rats were also a sing of the extreme violence that took place during the war. In the novel there was a part where there were rats that filled the ground of the soldier's underground shack where the men lived, and the men were very aggressive with killing the rats to wipe them out. That just shows us how the war had changed the men to be very violent through the war, and how them men fought in WW1. The men didn’t know any different because they knew that if they did not fight aggressively, or that violent that they would get themselves killed. The last symbol that I fell was important was the butterflies. I feel the butterflies showed how the war might be horrible and very violent and aggressive, but at the same time is a beautiful thing. That because of war there is freedom for us in the United States, and allows us to do many things that other people in other countries cannot do. at the end of the novel before Paul got shot he was starting at a butterfly and reaching for it. I feel Paul was having all the beautiful memories of his home, and when his sister and him used to play with butterflies when they were little kids. Through the reading of the novel there were many different symbols that were shown there are many good things through war, but at the same time it's also a violent and aggressive way of agreement.
