Writing A Problem Analysis
To: John Raines
From: Mia Grimm, Field Engineer
Date: November 07, 2014
Subject: Construction of a water-cooling tower

Introductory Summary I am writing to give an update on the observations that I have noticed on the construction site. I will be letting you know about all of the safety risks, delays, and any security issues that have occurred.

Safety We have had a couple of safety issues such as last week, Mary Powell, an M-Global safety inspector on the crew, cited 12 workers for not wearing their hardhats. Cement-truck drivers must slow down while driving through the site. Other workers complain about the excessive dust raised by the trucks. It is probably time, once again, to get all the subcontractors together to discuss safety at the tower site. Recently, two field hands had bad cuts from machinery.
Delays
There have been a few delays so far, three cement pourings for the tower wall were delayed an hour each on April 21 because of light rain. I heard from one of the subcontractors, Allis Wire, Inc., that there will be a two-day delay in delivering some steel reinforcing wires that go into the concrete walls. That delay will throw off next week’s schedule. Last Monday’s hard rain and flooding kept everyone home that day.
Security
I have also noticed that some of the materials have been disappearing. Though there have not been any major thefts at the site, some miscellaneous boards and masonry pieces are missing each day, probably because nearby residents doing small home projects think that whatever they find at the site has been discarded. Do you believe that additional No Trespassing signs needed to help solve this problem?
Conclusion
I am happy to inform that although we have run into more a few problems on the construction site, construction is only two days behind schedule. As long as nothing else goes wrong that hasn’t already been factored into the schedule we should be able to get back on track.

In “Big Ideas, Big Problems” written by Stefan Halper, Halper discusses the two issues, Big Ideas and constant media, that negatively affect U.S policies and its public. Advertised sloganeering along with America’s susceptibility to overly cumbersome political movements is the root of the problems that push citizens to feel patriotic in a negative and irrational way. Halper goes on to discuss the issues that continuously arise from each major world crisis by stating “each has suffered [from] … ill-conceived policy responses.” This lack of understating of foreign policies leads to citizens blowing things out of proportion and making simple ideas Big Ideas that are perceived as threats in comparison to American policies. This assignment was to investigate the constructor’s role so I want to talk about that a little bit. After learning about how this project failed I realized how important it is for construction managers to have a basic understanding of structural design. Had the construction manager on this Hartford Civic Center job understood the need for a structural engineer I might not be writing this paper. How he overlooked the deflection is shocking, that is a huge red light to get some structural help, especially on a job of this magnitude. In looking at the construction process a little broader than that of the construction manager; everyone involved, from the architect and engineer, to the sub-contractors doing the labor need to group together and work as a unit so failures like this don’t occur. It seems like there was a huge lack of communication between parties involved. Communication is a huge part of achieving and accomplishing a project successfully. This cannot happen or problems and failures like this will…

Construction sites are dangerous, and many accidents can occur. Each day on a work site, construction workers are subject to many tasks and pieces of equipment that can put their lives in danger. Workers are asked to work with heavy equipment and powered vehicles, such as forklifts (Powered vehicles), cranes and other heavy duty equipment, (OSHA, 2010). With all of the activities that occur on a construction site, accidents due to falls are the number one threat to construction workers on a work site, (OSHA, 2010). The U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) states that falls are the number one cause of construction injuries and deaths, (OSHA, 2010). Falls are the leading cause of deaths in the construction workplace. From 1995 to 1999 with an average of 362 fatal falls occurred; this trend is on the rise, (OSHA, 2010). OSHA states that it is important that safety and health programs have steps or measures to protect construction workers from falls on sites. Most fall-related injuries occur from unprotected side walls, wall openings, floor holes, not using scaffolding correctly, unguarded protruding rebar and not using ladders correctly, (OSHA, 2010). Falls from a height or from an elevation will count towards one third of all deaths in construction. Majority of construction work is conducted above ground, several stories in the air. Leading cause of falls are due to construction companies not having or utilizes the safety program that works towards a reduction in fall related accidents, (OSHA, 2010).…
