Personal Writing Assessment Reflection

Personal Writing Assessment Reflection The purpose of this paper is to personally reflect on my current skills and development areas. Using the results of the Personal Writing Assessment as a guide, I will discuss the areas where I show strength and also discuss the areas where I can benefit from utilizing Capella University’s vast library of resources. These resources offer me the opportunity to improve and gain greater proficiency. This personal reflection will enable me to build a strong foundation, as I begin my graduate studies.
General Reflections The Personal Writing Assessment showed that I am strong in areas such as writing an introduction, building a strong organizational structure within a paper and finally concluding my research and position topic. Areas that will require further improvement are punctuation and identifying the Abstract and Executive summaries. I was not surprised at the latter development opportunity, as I am not familiar with the terminology and official labelling of such writing summaries, despite using them often outside of the academic world. I was however, surprised at the punctuation assessment. I studied punctuation, the use of commas and conditional sub clauses within sentences during the high school English Language. My previous undergraduate studies were undertaken 21 years ago in the United Kingdom. I did not utilize APA guidelines when I quoted references in my papers. I therefore feel like I am learning this as a completely new skill, rather than refreshing previous understanding. I am blessed to have coworkers who are also

Based on the feedback given, the strengths identified are the ability to cover all points required in a paper and to write in a manner where all sections flow logically from one to the other for one to be able to read with ease. The common issue in the area of weaknesses seem to be the lack of support when speaking on a topic, there is also a consistent issue with APA style writing, namely the repeated lack of placing the first header correctly – this should be the title of the paper, and indenting of bibliography or references.…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

Throughout the year, my writing has had significant improvements, compared to where I began. First, I began this semester fairly confident in my writing abilities. I thought that I had a strong grasp on writing concepts that include: transition words, literary devices, proper grammar techniques, correct paper writing format. In contrast, I felt that I began the year with a weak vocabulary, which has always been one of my weaker areas, If I were to rank myself on day one of class, without knowing all of the material we were going to cover, I would rank my writing skills an eight out of ten.…

Writing in general is not one of my strong suits. It is difficult to highlight my strengths as I feel most of my writing shows off my weaknesses. I have almost failed English class, on more than one occasion, because I could not grasp punctuation and where to put something as simple as a comma.…
