Writing A DBQ Essay
During this year of high school, I have been given a lot of work and have been challenged by all my classes. I am enrolled in two AP classes and the work has been tough. These classes are two main areas in which this challenge has come from. In my AP US History class, we have been focusing on the writing portion of the exam for quite some time now. The writing portion includes a DBQ (Document Based Question), a LEQ (Long Essay Question), and a short answer section. The DBQ and LEQ are two types of writing styles that I had never heard or done before.This was going to be a challenge I knew that I needed to overcome. In my AP English Language class we have been working on a civil rights project and have to take action on our issue. The issue …show more content…
The way that this has happened was through my learning of how to write a DBQ and a LEQ. Through the process of learning to write these types of essays, I have learned much more about how to write proper essays. I have also learned to use documents as sources to help my writing become stronger and to help make my arguments more credible. To write a DBQ you must first read through all the sources provided and write an analysis for each. This is so when you choose what documents to use, you know how to utilize them in your essay. With this the sources are now used to support your argument. This type of writing can be used in many different ways. The analysis of sources and the usage of them, can be used to write argumentative essays or to help make a point about a topic. This writing isn't limited to just an A.P test because in college I am sure that the professors will have me writing papers and having a better understanding on how to write one, will put me at an advantage over other students. The LEQ is another type of writing on the A.P test. This type of writing requires you to already have knowledge on the topic and take a side on a viewpoint of the topic. This in turn will help me write better papers about my

    The enlightened despots indicated a belief in the equality of men and natural rights. They thought the people should be able to prosper, yet these “enlightened rulers” ruled in a despotic fashion. They believed that they had absolute power and that they were the state. Their words went above everybody's no matter what. In some kind of sense it was kind of like a parent to child relationship. The parent has the right to rule over the child to keep them in line. In the social order group, documents 1 and 6 prove this valid. For example, document 1 states, “ Argue as much as you will, only obey!” This is a contradiction that shows the demanding qualities of an enlightened despot. No one knows better then them. Also, document 6 states,”What is the true End on Monarchy? Not to deprive people of their natural liberty; but to correct their actions, in order to attain the supreme good...” This also shows that the leaders thought that they had the divine right to rule over the people like this. Both documents use social order to prove that the despots really just think that they are the ultimate ruler. In the political group, documents 4 and 8 also prove this valid. For example, document 4 states,” a ruler must be ready to sacrifice his life for the welfare of his subjects.” This shows that the despots were also enlightened. They did think that they were absolute rulers but they also took into account the welfare of their people. The despots wanted to make sure that their people were prospering and improving their quality of life. Also, document 8 states,”her policies will be based on Machiavellianism.” Again, this shows that the despots had the power to act like the state- absolutely and, if necessary, ruthlessly.     Throughout this 8-week semester, I have been learning how to write argumentative essays using the provided articles as well as the ones I find on my own to help support my arguments. I like how the first three papers are designed as a step by step teaching tool. For example, paper one teaches me how to read and summarize the articles and to give a short response to each article. This is very helpful, because without having a deep understanding of the issue being discussed, I would not be able to generate my opinion and present it to the audience. The second paper requires more than reading and summarizing. This paper actually introduces me to argumentative research essays by asking me to find one additional resource to support my arguments. The third paper, which is also the biggest research paper, requires me to have a well-broad understanding of the complexity of the topic and to be able to utilize three to four resources to effectively support my position. Thus, instead of throwing all the class material to me all at once, this class has taught me how to develop an argumentative paper step by step and provided me with a much stronger knowledge base about argumentative essays.     The prompt presented within the first week of the new semester was to compose an essay about myself. The first thing that came to mind was the simple fact I was going to fail. I had to ask several questions before even completely understanding the requirements. We had to evaluate who we were, why we were here, and how Mr. Henthorn could be of service to us. I worked for many days composing this essay; including many rough drafts and bad ideas. The first part of the prompt was by far the hardest, it took the most thinking. Prewriting consisted mainly of sitting around trying to figure out who I actually thought I was. I wrote about 3 rough drafts before deciding on how I was going to present myself. After finally liking one draft, I did numerous amounts of editing. The editing process was difficult for me because I did not want to mess up my very first essay and make a bad first impression. Revising the essay was much simpler with help from peers. The benefits of using a formatted writing process are ultimately what lead to my higher grade. This process helps to organize, edit, and write with ease during difficult assignments. To better organize I wrote many drafts and bulleted list of important ideas to include, which helped to be sure I included all necessary points.
