Paragraph 1 What is a nurse? Most people think that all nurses do is give shots and take doctors orders. A nurse is far more than that. A nurse in a nursing facility starts their day with a morning report. This report relays the information from one nurse to the next to help insure the best care can be given to the residents. While the nurse receives report they walk the hall to see if there is anything unusual or out of place, such as a resident on the floor, or missing from the facility. When the rounds are done the nurse usually takes the blood sugars. The blood sugars are taken from the diabetic residents who have a problem with their pancreas distributing sugar through the body. After collecting the results from the blood sugars the nurse must chart the results, and prepare the proper amoun, and type of insulin to each resident to ensure that they can function normally throughout the day. The next step in a nurse’s routine might include helping to feed the residents. The nurses are not only helping the residents eat they are observing for any out of the ordinary issues while eating, such as swallowing difficulties, aspiration, and choking while monitoring the residents intake also. After lunch is complete the nurse usually does wound care. Wound care is pretty much as it sounds treating a wound by cleaning the affected area and packing it with gauze and properly wrapping it up to keep it clean and dry so the skin doesn’t have any more breakdown or infection. Residents in a nursing facility fall quite frequently. When a resident falls the nurse stops whatever they are doing and attends to the person on the floor. The nurse comes in to the resident’s room and witnesses them on the ground. The nurse must establish why or how this happened. The nurse must also administer neuro checks which may include cardinal gazes, looking at pupils to see if they are round and equidistant, or belinski test which is when you run a pen up the foot to see if there is a reaction.
