In the early 1920s, as World War I ended, nations looked for peace as an outlet and hope for the future. As time passed, most countries were happy that the Great War had ended, however they were upset with the outcome. Since there were many costly expenses from the war, it caused many of the hostile nations to look for strong rulers for change. This allowed many harsh dictators to rise to power. These dictators were aggressive rulers and took forceful actions. In order to combat these aggressive rulers, other nations tried to resist war and give in to their demands. This type of action was known as appeasement. Not all countries felt the same way about this response; other countries believed that a collective security would work better.…

The United States has actually not declared war since World War II. In Article I, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, Congress has the power,"to declare war [and] grant letters of marque and reprisal."(archives.gov) But Article II,Section 2 provides that,"The president shall be Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States." (fed-soc.org) While it's clear that the intended action for Congress alone to declare war, presidents don’t necessarily act with them but rather on their own will and belief. Truth be told as well, many events were presidents acted on their own have occoured. World War 1 was called ‘The Great War’ because the world had never seen anything like it. However, the consequences of the peace that settled World War I would ultimately steamroll into a conflict that would be an even bigger disaster. More than 20 million people died during the war, which lasted from 28th July 1914 to 11th November 1918. (PBS) The war started when a Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an Austrian-Hungarian prince, and his wife Sophie on July 28, 1914. This assassination lead the feuding, competitive empires of Europe into making treaties, asking for help, and plotting revenge. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, which asked Russia, France and England for help. The Germans and the Ottomans forged ties to help Austria-Hungary. (DBQ background) Millions died in the slow, barely-advancing war. The United States was ultimately pulled in and assisted the English and French. Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire declared defeat,…

Prior to the start of World War 1, several countries in Europe were fixated on being the dominant country in Europe, seeking to hold the top position on the social hierarchy among the European nations. After the Age of Imperialism, many Europeans took great pride in their countries’ growth and prosperity. The most powerful countries in Europe at the beginning of the 20th century were becoming wealthier due to the trade from African colonies, while other countries (without income or revenue from colonies) struggled to achieve the same success. A strong sense of militarism in European countries and their root causes from alliances and rivalries contributed to the start of World War One. European countries passionate nationalism and need to show their dominance over other countries were the validation for many of their actions causing WW1. However, the most important underlying cause of World War 1 was militarism in European nations.…
