During World War 1 the whole world was a battlefield. World War 1 began in July of 1914 and ended in November of 1918. There were two forces fighting against one another, the Allies and the Central Powers. During the war dogs were used to carry messages out by carrying capsules attached to their bodies. On December 24th an unofficial truce was made, and the two sides spent the day singing Christmas carols to one another. But what was the root of World War 1? What caused the war to be initiated? The main causes of World War 1 were nationalism, militarism, and alliances. Nationalism is when people feel patriotism and pride in their country. Nationalism seems like it wouldn't be the cause of a war. However, it was a huge underlying cause. Nationalism gave the people overflowing confidence in their country, and they wanted to show it. Militarism is a feeling of pride towards your military and the desire to use it. Many young men during the 19th century felt more than willing to join the troops. Consequently, the size of countries armed forces grew and grew. In the early 1900’s Britain had the largest naval force in the world, and Germany threatened them with their growing forces. Germany didn't have the biggest naval force, but they were the best trained and most powerful. In response, Britain built a new ship called the Dreadnoughts. The want to be the best naval force was known as the arms race. In fear of being taken down by another naval force, countries joined together. When countries joined together they were then bound to fight for each other if one of them were attacked. Militarism may seem a bit like nationalism, but militarism focuses specifically on pride in the military. Militarism was an important cause of World War 1 because it had country’s militaries competing against each other.
